ReadyNas unresponsive after RAIDiator and Add-on upgrades

Hello, I own a Readynas Pro Business RNDP6350.
Two days ago my Readynas started experiencing some problems. Here is the sequence of events before the problems started:

- The Readynas has been working Ok for a few years, with Music, Movies, Photos and personal files.
- Just added new music files (140 Gb) to the storage inside the Readynas, it went OK. After the files where added, the Readynas still has 100 Gb of free space (Total capacity is 13 Tb.)
- Upgraded RAIDiator to version 4.2.27. Nothing to report, it went OK. It took a while to restart, but it succeeded after a while.
- Upgraded Plex Media Server to version 0.9.11.16.958-80f1748-i686. Nothing to report, it went OK.
- Upgraded Logitech Media Server to version 7.7.5, nothing to report, it went OK.
- From Frontview, opened Logitech Media Server (LMS) Manager. From the LMS Manager started a new (complete) music library scan. After a while, the scan the gets "stuck" at a particular new song with a very long (and containing some symbols) name. While the scan is still ongoing and stuck, I delete the offending song from the Readynas (from a Windows 7 machine through RAIDar). The scan is still unresponsive.

This is when the problems started to appear. Now every time when I restart the Readynas and open the LMS Manager, it is still stuck (scanning) and doesn't respond to my instructions to stop the scan.

I tried to uninstall LMS; Frontview then displays the message that it uninstalled the Add-on, but when I restart the Readynas the LMS Add-on is still there (this also happens now with any other Add-on that I try to uninstall.)

When I try to start or stop any Add-on from the Readynas, Frontview doesn´t report a message with the action ( "... Add-on has been started", or "... Add-on has been stopped" messages do not appear.)

I´m able to access Frontview from my Windows 7 machine, Frontview access is OK. But in Frontview > Status > logs, the logs have been erased. Frontview > Status > Health reports that everything is Ok.

I am not able to access the shares through RAIDar in my Windows 7 machine anymore, it says unable to connect.

I can´t install a new RAIDiator version through Frontview > System > Update > Local, also I can´t install any Add-on through Frontview > Add-ons > Add new. In both cases, Frontview replies "Update file is not valid for this architecture".

With my limited knowledge of Linux and after several hours of reading through the forum boards, it appears to me that the problem might reside in the music scan of the Logitech Media Server.

I have read that some file in a temporary log inside the LMS might be the problem and may need to be erased, but I have no access through RAIDar. I also have read that a Netgear technician might be able to fix it remotely.

Would this procedure solve the issue without losing the stored data inside the Readynas?;

1- Turn off Readynas.
2- Remove all disks (6 x 3Tb disks, all approved in the Official Compatibility List.)
3- Install two blank HD´s.
4- Boot up through "Boot Menu" > do a OS Reinstall from the internal Flash.
5- Upgrade the Raidiator to the latest version.
6- Turn off Readynas.
7- Remove the two empy HD´s.
8- Install my old disks with my data.
9- Turn on Readynas.

The Readynas warranty expired last year. Is it possible to request to open a support ticket paying for the service? I have to say that the warranty service during my warranty has been top notch, and that the Readynas is an amazing machine with incredible services and options and good workmanship. I need a little help now that it has expired, I would like to know what my options are.

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance for the response

Re: ReadyNas unresponsive after RAIDiator and Add-on upgrade

There might have been corruptions that had happen upon update of the add-ons, afaik support offers a one-time pay per incident if your device is out of service warranty. The OS on the NAS are both saved on the flash and the HDD so if you are going to update the same FW version using the blank HDDs , I might as well just perform an OS reinstall using the original 6 disks. Regarding the add-on not being uninstalled properly, I believe support can login to your unit using ssh/telnet to manually remove it.

Re: ReadyNas unresponsive after RAIDiator and Add-on upgrade

Your symptoms suggest that the 4GB OS partition might be full.

The missing status log, and the "Update file is not valid for this architecture" both suggest this is a possibility.

My suspicion would be that perhaps the LMS add-on has filled up the root partition.

I had the exact same issues as OP, and this was the problem. Thank you so very much! Saved me a tech support fee. 🙂

In my case, the partition was filled with
1) 1.6 GB of JNA tmp files: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Java_Native_Access
removed with: rm /tmp/jna*.tmp
2) 1.9 GB of CrashPlan cache: http://support.code42.com/CrashPlan/Latest/Troubleshooting/Clearing_Your_Cache_For_Quick_Fixes#Manually_Clearing_The_Cache
removed with: rm -rf /usr/local/crashplan/cache/*

Did a Reinstall OS just to get everything to a stable state. Now it works like new.

Re: ReadyNas unresponsive after RAIDiator and Add-on upgrade

If installing things manually you should try to get them to store as much as possible on the data volume rather than on the OS partition.

This could be achieved using a symlink or a setting change (depending on which is appropriate).

With a full OS partition it may not always be so simple to fix. Glad it was in your case.
