I have a Readynas 102 system with 2 2TB discs. there is about 230 GB of data on the discs. Yesterday I updated to 6.4.1, as suggested in the administration page. After that the system is extremely slow. I use windows 7 pc's and an Asus modem, all wired. In windows explorer it takes minutes to get the folder tree, if it comes with an answer at all. In many cases the response is, disc inaccesible.
Is there anybody who can help me with this,
thanks,
Joop Baltussen

Is the antivirus service enabled.

Re: Readynas 102 extremely slow after update to 6.4.1
Dear StephenB
thanks for your reply, by following all threads on slow performance of 6.4.1 and 6.4.0 I tried to turn off the virus check and that solved the issue. System seems to perform normal now.
- reading all the contribution I am still staggered that Netgear issues an update with major flaws. It works if you turn off the virus check, it sounds like a car that after a check-up only drives in case the air bags are disabled. Other people are happy that Netgear does not write software for aeroplanes, and I join them in this opinion. How difficult is it to understand that most customers prefer no update above a disfunctional update that make you spend half the night finding a solution as the system is needed next day for work. The absolute limit is that they offer to give support at a rate of 107 dollars for a problem they caused themselves in the first place.
So, still thanks for your interest and maybe it helps somebody else who unsuspectingly pressed the updat button.

Re: Readynas 102 extremely slow after update to 6.4.1
Hi JoopB,
For the meantime, have the said AV feature disabled so you can access the ReadyNAS in your network using SMB file-sharing protocol. NETGEAR is currently working on a fix for this issue and it will be available soon.

Re: Readynas 102 extremely slow after update to 6.4.1
I have a ReadyNAS 316 with 6x4TB in RAID 5, since upgrading to 6.4.1 the the RAID is crippled down to around 5-10MB/s
I never had antivirus turned on and its not on.
I upgraded to 6.4.1 several days ago and never thought much of it, but then I started to see some problems with accessing files over samba, at first I thought the newly upgraded Windows 10 system was to blame so after testing on another PC and after ruling everything else out I realized the probem was related to the ReadyNAS FW update.. (5 days after upgrading to 6.4.1) I downgraded back to 6.4.0 hoping it would solve the problem only to realize that this it did not, performance still suffered, So moving forward I am back at 6.4.1..
At first I thought the problem was samba, but after running direct disk benchmarks I noticed the problem effects all disk operations.
RAID5
Timing buffered disk reads: 24 MB in 3.62 seconds = 6.62 MB/sec
Sansdisk flash drive connected to USB3 port
Timing buffered disk reads: 162 MB in 3.01 seconds = 53.77 MB/sec

Re: Readynas 102 extremely slow after update to 6.4.1
Hello bigstar,
Can you try disabling SMB then re-enable it and see if there any improvement?
6.4.2-T59 (Beta 1) is also already available, you might want to try it.

Re: Readynas 102 extremely slow after update to 6.4.1
I disabled SMB and then re-enabled it, no difference.
I upgraded to the beta FW and the problem is now solved.
What was the bug?
root@nas-6E-51-C8:~# hdparm -Tt /dev/md127
/dev/md127:
Timing cached reads: 1882 MB in 2.00 seconds = 940.34 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 1014 MB in 3.01 seconds = 337.34 MB/sec
Thank you very much.

Re: Readynas 102 extremely slow after update to 6.4.1
After upgrading to 6.4.2-T59 (Beta 1) it seems like file delete operations and directory listing are still slow compared to 6.4.0
A folder with 3,000 files can take up to 30 seconds to list via SFTP and some files take up to 5 seconds for the delete operation to complete.
The RAID isn't scheduled to defrag for another couple weeks, but somehow I don't think that's the reason for the slowness.

Re: Readynas 102 extremely slow after update to 6.4.1
Hello,
with 6.4.1 I also had the descibed problem with showing the thumbnials in folders with many pictures extremly slow. Deactivation of AV on NAS102 or WIN10 did not solve the problem. After updating to 6.4.2 T59 the problem is solved.
There`s only one minor issue: Before 6.4.1 I had transfere rates between 90-100 MB/s on a 1 GB file. Now it`s between 60-70 MB/s. It only recovers to 90-100 MB/s after I restart the NAS. Unfortunately it becomes slow again after some minutes/hours.
Is there I file in the system log that could give any indications? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you,
Robert

Re: Readynas 102 extremely slow after update to 6.4.1
Does the same behavior shows when using SMB file protocol? or is this problem only specific to SFTP?
Naturally after the files were deleted I was unable to reproduce the same test with the same files.
Testing with a batch of newly created files I was unable to reproduce the issue via SFTP, SSH, Samba, or FTP.
I will keep an eye on the issue and report back if the problem persists.

Re: Readynas 102 extremely slow after update to 6.4.1
Don't know if you'll read this but like you I am stunned that Netgear can allow a piece of firmware, 6.4.0 to be rolled out with so many issues, then provide 6.4.1 which if nothing else has made it worse for me.
Then to rub salt into the wound when I raise a request for support they want to charge me nearly £100 for support to deal with an issue on a 102 which is only 18 months old and was working fine on 6.2.5.
The latest thoughts from Netgear is that I try a beta firmware. Like I fell off a Christmas tree. If a piece of supposed tested firmware wrecks my systems performance and ability to provide reliable backups do they really think I want to install some beta firmware?

At least at the moment I can access my data albeit slowly and my backups will take place but will take 4 hours instead of the previous 1 hour.

Hi YorkBoy,
There are other users who have experienced the same but was sorted out by disabling the AV feature of the ReadyNAS. As of now, this issue is being addressed and a fix will be available soon.

Re: Readynas 102 extremely slow after update to 6.4.1
Thank you for taking the time to reply.
Yes Netgear have said the same thing many times and I have told them every single time that my AV is disabled.
At the moment I live with the 102 running very slow, the backups taking four times as long as they used to, I have a share which is shown as a hard drive which doesn't exist until I plug in my backup drive and it appears as an exact mirror except in name.
Back in October last year I had a fully working system, since 6.4.0 it's been a nightmare.
I have a readynas V1 it has always run faultlessly and I'm seriously thinking about reverting to that and scraping the 102 which has been problematic since day 1. The problems being caused without exception by firmware issues.
Theres a saying, when it ain't broke don't fix it.

Re: Readynas 102 extremely slow after update to 6.4.1
Hi YorkBoy,
I checked your support ticket and our L3 Engineer gave some insight about the issues that you've reported. Would you mind trying the Beta Firmware 6.4.2 (beta 2) and try another external USB storage to run your backup? It was also mentioned that network performance is also contributing to the slow R/W performance. Perhaps, connect your ReadyNAS to your PC and see if it improves.
I look forward to your response.
Kind regards,

Re: Readynas 102 extremely slow after update to 6.4.1
Hi
Thank you for taking the time to reply.
Yes I am aware of the beta firmware but I am wary of trying it for the following reasons.
1) perfectly good tried and tested firmware 6.4.0 wrecked my system.
2) perfectly good tried and tested firmware 6.4.1 solved one issue (USB backups) but created other issues and slowed it down considerably.
3) a previous beta firmware for another earlier issue caused me problems which took days to recover from.
4) nobody as yet has bothered to look at my system using remote access even though back before Christmas this had all been arranged. I have sat and waited for someone from Netgear to contact me so I can show them this most perculiar issue which is as follows. I insert a USB hard drive for my backup and two devices appear as shares, the second being described as a 3.0_Slider (which is the name for a Corsair USB stick which was at one time used in the front USB for backup of particular data). This second device has exactly the same storage sizes as the hard drive and if I try to eject this 'ghost' drive the system ejects both the ghost and the USB hard drive. This problem of ghost shares occurred when I first bought the unit 18 months ago. A firmware update finally sorted it but now it's back but nobody else is reporting this.
5) I need my NAS for my work and really can't afford to create anymore issues.
Thanks again for your time.

Re: Readynas 102 extremely slow after update to 6.4.1
Ok thank you for this.
Elsewhere someone has posted a link to enable users to go back to 6.2.5 which for me worked a treat. I haven't had the courage to do this as my business relies on my 102 and while it's slow it does work.
I think it's absolutely appalling that users have been put to all this inconvenience. Once or rather if my 102 ever works properly again, once it does I'll never update my firmware again.
Good luck.

Also experiencing this issue - dead slow response over SMB with my RN102 since upgrading to 6.4.1. Have now performed a factory reset and am restoring from backup. I'll keep you posted if this sorts it.
Hopefully you tried disabling the antivirus service first.

Hi.
no offence but this idea of disabling the AV is the only idea that Netgear come up with, again and again and again.... And yes it is disabled.
but thank you.

I was asking @mjcourtney (hoping that he'd tried it before he dove into the factory reset).
Though it clearly hasn't solved your problem, it has worked for most of the other posters - which of course is why the advice is repeated.
