Readynas Duo Boot Failure - Help Needed
Hello,
I have a Readynas Duo with two 1TB drives.I believe it is a Readynas Duo v1. The Readynas is set up so that disk 2 mirrors disk 1.
I recently had to shut the NAS down due to a planned power cut we were having. It was left off for a few days while other work on the house power was being done. Prior to the shutdown I was getting message about error on disk 1 which I hadn't done anything about (I think you can see where this is going). I WILL ALSO ADMIT THAT I DON'T HAVE A CURRENT BACK_UP OF THE NAS!
That last point is a real concern since when I went to Power up the Readynas again I get a situation where the Readynas does not finish booting up and I get the flashing blue LED light issue. If I look in RAIDAR I get a message saying "there is a disk failure". I have a suspicion that it is Disk 1 that has failed but I am not sure. There is no indication in RAIDAR either way. I have a few questions below but my real concern is that I don't know 100% what I am doing and, as mentioned above, I don't have a back-up so I'm really concerned about doing something that could destroy my data!
My questions are:
1) I have a replacement 1TB disk. Can I just replace the disk that (I think) has failed? If so, do I need to power down the Readynas to do this? Will the data from disk 2 then re-sync to disk 1?
2) As I said, I'm pretty sure the failed disk is disk 1 but I'm not 100% sure. Before replacing the disk can I simply try removing it from the NAS and see if it boots OK with just disk 2 in the device? Again, does the NAS need to be powered down to do this? Would it make sense to do this and if it boots up do a back-up before I put the new replacement disk in?
Any help anyone could give would be greatly appreciated. I've had a look in the FAQ and done a search of the forums but didm;t really find a clearly similar situation to mine.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Marcus

Re: Readynas Duo Boot Failure - Help Needed
1. You could try that.
2. Yes. Could be a good idea to backup the data if it comes up before adding the replacement disk while the NAS is on. I would power off the NAS before removing disk 1.
Do you remember if you were using X-RAID or Flex-RAID? That may affect things a bit.

I think it might be X-RAID. I don't think I did anything special when setting up the ReadyNAS. The ReadyNAS initially came with one disk and I then acquired a second disk which was added to Bay 2 and the drive was set up to mirror drive one. When I used to look at the virtual drive in Windows Explorer the size was reported as approximately 1TB and the two drives are 1TB drives.
