Readynas Pro RNDP6000 upgrade fail.

Yesterday while moving files around I noticed that Netgear said the new 6.10.10 was out. Cool reboot to upgrade and boom won't boot. I turn it off and on it goes into safe mode. I let it sit for a bit thinking maybe it needs a new start. I then go ahead and hit the power button, let it ask for power again to shut down. After that I wait again and turn it on. It'll go to about 99% sometimes only 96% as I've done this a few times. Now, out of curiousity sake I think maybe upgrade issue and so I pull all drives out. It boots into safe mode, I reboot it and then the system finally goes and boots. I then let it install leaving the drives out as I did t wanna potentially lose data. That finishes and I'm able to browse the os. Good deal, shut it down, reinsert the drives and now and I'm back to sitting at 99%. It has now sat like this for 2 hours or more. Thoughts?

You could try booting using the option to skip the volume check.

How would I skip that? I let it sit over night trynna boot and we're still sitting at 99%. Can I boot the system with the drives pulled and then insert them? Will that corrupt the data?

You make that selection via the reset button menu at boot time.

 

No, you cannot boot and then insert the drives.  That is a very good way to make data recovery impossible.

So I tried to boot and skip the volume check twice and it gets to about 92% booting and then still just sits there.

Ok, that skipping has not worked. I've let it sit for a while. Should I attempt an OS install with the volumes in or will that mess up the volume?

It is not possible to do an OS reinstall without the disks.  There is a small OS partition that is mirrored on every disk - the NAS normally boots from that partition.  The OS reinstall partially reinstalls the OS to that partition.  So it accomplishes nothing if the disks are not in the NAS.

 

I doubt it will help, but it is data-safe, so ok to try.   Note it will change some settings:

  • the admin password will be reset to password
  • the network configuration will be set to DHCP with no bonding/LAG
  • volume quota will be disabled (which can be re-enabled after you get it to mount from the volume settings wheel).

I dont have any of that other stuff setup. The one thing I found interesting though is if I have all the disks pulled, all 6 of them. This thing will boot up into safe mode and get an IP that I can reach. I then get the screen of put in the disk for a volume to be created. Which I did not do but I then shut it down. I then actually shut it off, reseated the drives, ran the os reinstall boot menu option. It showed updating firmware and then it has booted. It shows it is currently syncing but everything is there. I then updated the IP address to the static IP I originally had and then during the applying of it it has stopped responding and nothing on the screen again.

That sounds like you may have a full OS partition.

Have you ever used the linux command line interface?

Do you have a backup of the files?
