I want to use my RN104 connected directly to my windows 10 PC to backup files etc the PC will be on my wifi and internet but the router is nowhere near the RN104 so the RN104 will NOT be connected to it
can I use it like this (ethernet cable plugged into PC from NAS) or do I need to assign the NAS an IP address somehow?
thanks in advance

Hi @Iamnotanumber, as the router and the nas are most probably in the same house/appartment you could consider to connect both via PowerLAN as a workaround. Easy installed and fast enough to stream full hd between the nas and a tv at least in my home, it should not be a problem to do your backup through that channel.
However, if you can afford to not use the ethernet port of your pc to connect to your router, you could create some kind of "MickeyMouse"-network between the pc and the nas using a single ethernet cable. Both, nas and pc would need static ip-addresses for that and you would make the pc the standard gateway for the nas on that mini-lan.
Kind regards

This can be done, but there are some disadvantages. For example
- The NAS clock wouldn't be synced to the correct time
- The RN104 won't receive hotfixes that Netgear pushes
- Firmware updates would need to be done manually
- Antivirus definitions would never be updated
- Services like DLNA would of course not be available to the rest of your network.

You will need to assign a static IP address to the NAS, and also assign a compatible static IP address to the PC's LAN port.
If the PC has a fast wifi connection to the router, then I suggest leaving the NAS connected to the router, and back up the PC files to the NAS over wifi.
If the PC's wifi isn't fast, then another alternative is to get a wifi extender with multple LAN ports. Connect one port to the NAS, and another to the PC. The PC internet speed would improve, and the NAS would be able to reach the internet. Note PC backups wouldn't go over wifi, the traffic would only transit through the switch built into the extender.
