Remote streaming of media files to IOS devices

I have a ReadyNAS 104.

1. I can stream my media files via local wifi and Ethernet seamlessly to:

IPhone

IPads

WD media streamer

Xbox

using a combination of Plex and infuse App.

2. What I hope to achieve is to access the files remotely either through another wifi connection or over LTE network using a combination of IPhone or IPad.

Can anybody advise on how to achieve this?

You can do that with the plex app you already have installed.  You might need to forward it's port in your router to your plex server.

New to that aspect, could you talk me through it?

The default port that the plex server uses is 32400.   The normal steps are

  1. reserve an IP address in your router for the plex server (likely your ReadyNAS)
  2. forward TCP port 32400 to that reserved address.

The details depend on your router model.

Once you've done that, the plex app should be able to play your media over the internet.

Logged into router under port forwarding tab:
Reserved static IP for plex server on ReadyNAS
Set port to 32400 as advised and as per plex website.
Tried to connect to NAS drive but unable to establish link.
Plex app appears to be continually cycling through the connection process.
Think progress has been made but not quite there yet.
Any ideas?

Is the NAS using the IP address you reserved?

If not, you should try rebooting the router.

When you say you "set port to 32400" - did you forward port 32400 in the router?   Or set it in the plex server configuration?

Re: Remote streaming of media files to IOS devices

IP for NAS and port forwarding in the router are identical, router settings for HTTP and port ID of 32400 this reflects plex setting.
Also tried to add server manually in plex app advanced settings using IP and router setting but would not connect over LTE network.
I'm thinking with the router IP and port setting showing active in the firewall for port forwarding maybe this is a NAS issue restricting access to internet.

Since you reserved the address in the router, the NAS should be using DHCP.

You can check internet connectivity by download the log zip, and looking in connman.log.  You should see NTP time adjustments.

Got it! UPnP was disabled on the router.
Thanks for all your support. My kids will be happy to have their film collection away from home now.

I'm glad it's working.  Though this means that something was not right with the forwarding.
