Good afternoon,
I have 4x2TB HDD in my RN104 for storage purposes only (Type: jbod)
I wanted to replace my 2TB HDD (#4) so I bought a 4TB HDD WD Red
I did the following:
1) Backup the 2 TB HDD (#4)
2) Destroyed the 2TB HDD (#4)
3) Replaced the 2TB with the 4TB
The 4TB showed in the RN104, but there is no option to create a new volume
It shows "Raid type: Unknown"
I could not find an option to create a new volume other than X-RAID (NOT green line) at the right side of the screen.
a) Clicked on "new volume"
A warning appeared "You selected one disk. Disk protection requires at least 2 disks. Do you want to proceed without disk protection?". clicked "yes" and after some time got "volume creation failed", then I formatted the HDD (option below X-RAID).
b) 4TB HDD (#4) disappeared.
b) Shut down the Ready NAS 104, took out 4TB HDD and initialized it in Windows 10
c) Inserted the HDD (#4) still did not show
d) Because the other 3 HDD showed as "spare" I selected the 4TB HDD (#3) and clicked on "global spare". Now it shows as in the picture.
I plan to gradually replace the 2TB HDD iwth 4TG or 8TB when the price is right and after I learn how to replace the HDD properly.
As I said before, I use my Ready NAS 104 for storage only.
I'd really appreciate your help.
Antonio

Thank you for your prompt reply.
I will test the 4TB HDD using the manufacturer's tool as you suggest and let you know the results.
Yep, you were right. My first DOA in many years. 😞
Time to contact WD.
Thank you for your help

Re: Replacing HDD RN104 jbod volume creation option?
Formatting in Windows does nothing to help you create a NAS volume and is marginally effective in determining a drive is good only if done using the long format option. Once you have done it, you need to format again in the NAS. It sounds like your drive is bad. Clicking on the single drive and selecting "Create a Volume" was the right thing to do and it's failure tends to indite the drive since you just had another in there that worked. The best thing to do is to test the drive with the manufacturer's tool for doing so.

Usually it's easier to exchange with the seller (if you are still within the return period).
If you do go with WD directly, make sure you are getting a new drive with the full warranty, and not one that is recertified.

Re: Replacing HDD RN104 jbod volume creation option?
Thank you Stephen,
Good advice.
I bought the HDD from Amazon; I got it on Friday, October 9, 2020.
In the past I've had good experience dealing with WD. They would send me an advance replacement and return label. But this time I will return the HDD to the seller as per your suggestion.
It is my first time dealing with Amazon. Fingers crossed.
Thank you for all your help and advice.
