Setting up FTP to NV+ v2

Hi all,

I need some help setting up ftp access to my nv+ v2... I am not very in tune with networking terms, so most of the threads I have read help me to a certain extent and then I get lost halfway through...
This is the link that I was following http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=58380&hilit=+ftp+setup
This is what I have done so far...

In dashboard, under ftp sharing protocol settings:
It was set to port 21, but i changed it to 31 (What do I put here??)
Authentication Mode - User
Allow upload Resumes - Enabled
Home Shares over FTP - Enabled
Passive Ports 1025 - 65540 (What do I put here??)
Use Masquerade Address - Enabled
Masquerade as - Phreshbox (Hostname)

Also each share is set to read/write ftp access

In the above link it says: On the router, TCP ports xxxx to xxxx+5 are forwarded to the Duo
ddns is active, so I can use a uri to reach the router.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN??

in my router when I go to advanced settings - port forwarding, I see a text window and all the ports being forwarded to my nv+ ip address all say port 8086...
Do if change this????? how do I make it match the passive ports listed in dashboard?
I need these instructions in basic steps please!

Lastly, I use cyberduck as my ftp client (OSX)...
I use FTP-SSL instead of just FTP?
I use my username that has been set in the dashboard
I set the Port to being 31..
What do I set as the server?????

Thanks 1000000000x for your patients in explaining these things in a more basic language than usual!

31 is not a good choice, it is allocated by the internet folks for a different service. Normally if you use a non-standard port it should be in the range 49152-65535. So maybe use 50000 for the FTP port, and 50001-50009 for the passive ports. Then you need to forward 50000-50010 to the NAS in your router.

see above

??? What is Phreshbox? The name of your NAS or something else?

If you use the range above, you'd need to forward 50000-50010 to the NAS IP address. How you do this depends on your router, there is no general advice. If you google your router model, you can sometimes find step by step instructions. Or perhaps read the router manual.

Your router's external IP address is that you would use when accessing the NAS over the internet. One problem is that address changes - how often depends on your IPS. So it is better to use a name (http://www.something.something). DDNS is a service that does this. http://www.dyn.com is one service like this, there are some others. Often they are not free. dyn.com should give you some more information.
