Setting up ReadyNAS Duo V2 for remote file sharing

Newbie to this board here...

I have a ReadyNAS Duo V2 I bought years ago for backups, sharing etc on my home network with my family.

Long story, divorce sums it up. Unplugged the thing in early 2014, moved to another province, it has sat in a box for years.

A recent project is digitizing large quantities of slides and then sharing them with family all over the map. Trying to come up with ideas where I can send a link or something for people to download the pics and then I thought about my NAS.

Dragged it out, hooked it up, launched it, couldn't get in due to forgetting my log in credentials from years ago. Did the OS reinstall thing and got in. Tried changing the default password and it gave me greif there and wouldn't let me back in, but thats another thread one day....

I have it up and running ok, 2 - 2tb drives in it. Running it on Windows 10. Thats another nightmare.... SSL certificate issues, Windows won't let me do this and that. Error error error...SMB1 doesn't work, need SMB2 or higher, NAS unit has 1 - Argh! But I'm in there. Didn't see a recent firmware flash to fix this stuff. Likely too old and not supported now....

I thought it was possible to use this device for remote sharing. I've been poring over the user manual, various online searches etc. and not really getting anywhere fast. Going crosseyed reading stuff so thought I would wander in here and ask.

I know it's an old unit now in todays standards, but it's what I have and I want to use it. I am unfamiliar with current standards of how to go about remotely sharing. I want to load a pile of stuff on it and have my brother in Mexico somehow log in and download to his hearts content. Same with people elsewhere all over Canada.

To save me a bunch of trial and error, (heavy on the error) can this be achieved?

And if so, suggestions on doing it?

In the Add-Ons box it shows one only - ReadyNAS Photos II.

Do I need other add ons?

You could get OwnCloud from https://rnxtras.com/readynas-os5-arm and install it on the NAS.

ReadyNAS Photos II was shut down quite a while ago.  There used to be a "ReadyNAS Remote" service also - that was also shut down.  ReadyCloud is the current service, but that requires a newer ReadyNAS model than what you have - you'd need a model that runs 6.x firmware.

OwnCloud should work great.  As configured "out of the box", OwnCloud expects that it has files expressly uploaded to it for future download.  If that doesn't meet your needs, look into the use of "external" shares.  You can use that to map normal ReadyNAS shares or folders to OwnCloud folders so you don't have to have two copies.  You can make the linked folder read-only in OwnCloud so nobody accidently  deletes your originals.  In my OwnCloud system, I even map a folder on another NAS that is in turn mounted on the OwnCloud NAS via NFS.

So I install Owncloud on my NAS, not sure how I do that but I'm sure I can figure it out. Is Owncloud compatible with my 5.3.7 firmware?

Are my shared files still stored on the NAS?

How do people access it to download what I share?

Is there a specific link to ?? I send out? Password protected? Can this all be done on my home ISP connection?

Pardon me for not knowing, I used to be really up on all this kind of thing, but haven't played around with it in many years. I'm rusty.

@StephenB gave you a link to where, for a very reasonable price, you can purchase a build of OwnCloud made expressly for your NAS.  The money Whocares takes in from those sales just goes to keep the web site up (if it even fully pays for that).

Doing it on your own with an older Linux distro base is not something for a Linux newbie to take on.

When I first looked at the site I totally missed the part about OS5. I didn't understand what I was looking at, now I do.
