Snapshots not working RN104 - Firmware 6.9.1

Snapshots on my RN104 have not been working for a while and I was hoping to spend some time fixing them over christmas can anyone please advise,

 

I am currently on firmware revision 6.9..  The system has a total fo 8Tb storage mirror to giving 3.61 Tb total space of which 2.2Tb are available

I woul start with logs analysis by going to front end System >> Logs >> download logs and the check log files with snapshot action details.

Does "Not working" meaning they are not being created? 

 

What settings are you using?  Have you tried created a manual snapshot for a share?

Yes, the snapshots are not being created.

 

I have a mixture of settings:

  • Smart daily and weekly
  • Custom

Thanks, I checked out the logs and there were not recent errors and no entries with snapshots in then 😞

Yes,  I now have a mixture of smart and custom snapshot and none of them appear to be working 😞

If you have ssh enabled and you feel comfortable in linux command line - you can check the snapshost set up on a system level.

Once connected - navigate to

 

 /YourVolumeName/._share/YourShareName/

and check two files

custom_snapshot_management.conf
custom_snapshot_schedule.conf

In the first file you will find basic set up, including 'enabled' flag. See sample from my box below:

enabled = yes
retention_rule = lifetime
lifetime = 5184000
number = 30
nonempty_snapshots = yes
prev_versions = no

In schedule conf you will see something that will match the hour/week map from the front end

..........1.....1.....1.
..........1.....1.....1.
..........1.....1.....1.
..........1.....1.....1.
..........1.....1.....1.
..........1.....1.....1.

Can you please confirm it is enabled and you have something more than only dots in the schedule file?

 

Additionally - you can check if your cron daemon is running

Neither of those are manual snapshots.  Try clicking the settings wheel for a share, and then click on the snapshot button.  It will prompt you for a snapshot name.  Then see if the snapshot is successfully created.

Ok.  That says the issue isn't with the file system, it has to be something else that is triggering it.

 

Do you have disk spindown enabled?  If so, check the power settings, and make sure that "spin up disks to take scheduled snapshots" is checked.

 

If that setting is checked, then disable spindown for a bit, and see that changes the behavior.
