* Solved * Case#:15848658 > ReadyNAS RNDX400E won't expand.
Hi,
ReadyNASRNDX400E
RAIDiator 4.2.17
3 X 1.5 TB SAMSUNG HD154UI [1397 GB]
Added a fourth drive SAMSUNG HD154UI [1397 GB]
ReadyNAS detected, checked, resynced.
ReadyNAS doesn't expand?
All 4 drives are OK.
After the complete proces the total RAID volume stays at 2769 GB.
I expected 4191 GB.
Turned on Volume scan and Quota control at Shutdown.
Unplugged power from the ReadyNAS for 10 minutes.
Plugged in power, ReadyNAS booted. FS Scan OK. Quota control OK.
But no expansion.
Yes, i know the drive's are not (yet) on the HCL.

Re: Case #: 15848658 > ReadyNASRNDX400E won't expand.
Please take a look at What To Do When Expansion Doesn't Start and see if the suggestions there help.
Ensure disk spin-down is disabled under System > Power. If you still have the "Disable Journaling" (not to be confused with "Disable Full Data Journaling" option which can safely remain checked) option under System > Performance ensure this is unchecked.
Please also download your logs (Status > Logs > Download all logs), extract the zip contents and post the contents of partition.log (please use the code tags, not the quote tags to enclose this).
Reboot the NAS. Wait 5-10 minutes and if expansion hasn't started do another reboot.
As you aren't using drives on the compatibility list I doubt NetGear would help with your problem.

OK;

Partitioning looks fine. If all disks are like that then you have 4k sector alignment.

Hi MDGM,
Can you please tell me where i can find "Disable Journaling"?
It's not under System > Performance.

Re: Case #: 15848658 > ReadyNAS RNDX400E won't expand.
Had contact with Tech Support.
It's a good thing you updated to verson 4.2.17 what I advise you to do is to make a Firmware re-installation anyway. How to do this you can find here:
http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how ... e_firmware
Can you confirm that your using Flexraid?/expanable raid? Because if you use 3x 1.5TB this means that you should have 4.5TB (fysically about 3.8TB) It seems that you only user 2x 1.5TB harddisk that would make 3 TB, and fycically about 2.7TB.
If you mirror disks you can't add more disks than 2. (depending on the raid)
Please bare in mind that your harddisks are NOT on the compatibility list. This means that the nas can react different than it should.
Most important for me to know now: What RAID are you using? please inform me.
Firmware re-installation from flash was an option but did nothing for the expansion. 😞
RAID configuration isn't for everybody a well know part.
For so far i know, Flexraid isn't expandable....?
3 X 1.5TB in RAID = 3TB
Waiting for Tech Support again.

Flex-RAID is expandable on 4.2.16+ but with more caveats than X-RAID2. X-RAID2 (which you are using) is a much simpler setup. Continue working with tech support.

Re: * Solved * Case#:15848658 > ReadyNAS RNDX400E won't expa
Interesting. I had forgotten about this thread yesterday when my NVX Pioneer would not exapand after replacing two of four ST31000528AS 1TB Seagate drives with 2 Hitachi HDS5C3030ALA630 3TB drives. I did a similar process last week with my NVX Business Edition, and after it had done the initial resync of the second drive, I got the message additional space was found for expansion and the expansion would take place after the next reboot. On the BE, that took place after the first reboot.
However, after at least four reboots on the Pioneer, no expansion was forthcoming. The only difference in the set up of the two machines is that I had installed the Bonnie++ add on to measure the file transfer speed. I deleted the add on, rebooted and got the message again that additional space was found. One final reboot and it started. Others may want to check their system for any add ons if expansion does not start.

I think the problem has to do with a 'Ghost' Snapshot option for NVX Pioneer Edition.
NVX Pioneer Edition does not support snapshot but it looks like it is the bottleneck for the expansion:

Re: * Solved * Case#:15848658 > ReadyNAS RNDX400E won't expa
Answer from L3 Support:
It may be because of snapshot.
If there is hiden invalid snapshot, expansion will not go.
If you have used remote or online fsck, but been killed ab-normally, there are/may be invalid snapshot as leftover.
I remember there was a snapshot on file /etc/lvm/archeive/c_0000*.log .

Hi,
I know this is a old post, I hope someone can help...
I suspect I have the same problem, how do I go about checking for a ghost snapshot, and once checked, how do I remove it?
Many thanks,
Llew

langus this is an old dead thread. Please open a new thread with a tech support (http://www.readynas.com/support) case number in the thread title (subject of first post in the thread)
Please describe the symptoms you are experiencing. This will help with determining whether it's the same problem.
