Time to swap out one of my Raid disks? RN 516 (6 bay)

It’s been quite awhile since I last dropped into this forum. Things have been going very smoothly with my RN516  and I have found in the past that your advice has been dispensable. I’ve come across a issue this afternoon with my NAS which I hope someone to help me with.

When the NAS booted as usual an hour ago, I’ve noticed that the front panel is displaying the message ‘Raid10: degraded’. On the admin screen which I can still access there’s a message  ‘The ReadyNAS is currently syncing. During this process, the system is still accessible

There is also a message displayed in red on the Volumes page ‘Remove inactive volumes to use the disk. Disk #5’. (See screenshot attached). I have gone back through my log file and about two days ago the system displayed its first warning message ‘Disk in channel 5 (Internal) changed state from RES’  (I would have attached the log file but I have reached the end of my file upload limit).

I can still access my Plex server on the machine though I’m not too keen to run the machine in anything less than optimal condition.

My two questions are these. can I assume that disk # 5 is unserviceable and needs to be replaced? Do I just turn off the machine and swap it out for a new brand one same specs then restart the machine and wait until the machine has done it’s magic and ready for use?

Do I need to wait until the machine has resynced or can I just swap it out regardless of whether it’s finished or not?

Have I missed anything?

Yes I am with Gmail. Thanks I found the reference on  my Google account to thirty party app approvals and configured it back on the Readynas rhen sent a test email. it’s all working well for the first time ever I think I bought the 516 about eight years ago so thank you Stephen for helping me get the email alerts working. hopefully I’ll be alerted to a impending disk failures a bit sooner.  I’ll mark this one as a solution

Not sure, but the very long time on the resync estimate suggests that you do need to replace it. Your inactive volume message is also a bit unusual - the system seems a bit confused on disk 5.

You could download the log zip file and look for errors.  Or just replace it.

I always recommend hot-swapping (NAS running), and not powering down.  The model and specs don't need to exactly match - so don't go crazy looking for a model that is no longer sold.  In general, I recommend NAS-purposed disks (WD Red Plus or Seagate Ironwolf), or enterprise class disks.  I don't recommend SMR drives - for example WD Reds.  Many 2 TB desktop class drives are now SMR, so I recommend avoiding them.

You don't need to wait for it to finish.

Do you have a current backup of the data?  If not, it would be prudent to back it up before manipulating the disks.

The disk are relatively new and they are the red label disks. Yes I’ve made sure I have a full backup of the data last done a few months ago. Thanks for going to the trouble to respond  Much obliged

WD20EFAX?  Or a different model?  The WD20EFAX are SMR.

2 TB SATA WD20EFRX.

One more question. That fact that this disk reported an error means it shouldn't be trusted even if it can be reformatted and then appears OK. Which means it will probably fail again at some point in the future so best to discard?

That's a bit of a judgment call.  I do have some disks that have generated a single error that I am still running.

What underlying errors (if any) are you seeing in the log zip?

Re: Time to swap out one of my Raid disks? RN 516 (6 bay)

Ive bought and installed a seagate Iron Wolf 2TB replacement disk. Im waiting for the volumes to rebuilt. Because I configured the array for XRAID, Im guessing that at the end the process it will add the new disk to the array and write data to it.

Here the dump of the log file. (If you wondering, I haven't been able to configure the alert message facility to send warnings emails to me)

Re: Time to swap out one of my Raid disks? RN 516 (6 bay)

I'm thinking that your volume is resynced by now - is that the case?  If so, is the web ui responding normally again?

We could follow up on getting your email alerts to work (more on that below).

Sometimes log snippets trigger the automatic spam filter - that's what happened in your case.

Ive bought and installed a seagate Iron Wolf 2TB replacement disk. Im waiting for the volumes to rebuilt. Because I configured the array for XRAID, Im guessing that at the end the process it will add the new disk to the array and write data to it.

You were using FlexRAID (manually configured to RAID-10), and only had one volume.  Did you change that, or just hot-swap the replacement?

Sep 27 18:01:09 Readynas516 readynasd[3668]: Resyncing started for Volume raid10

These bits suggest that

  1. Disk 5 actually was marked as failed
  2. The system shut down (so you must have enabled the setting to do that at some point)
  3. When you rebooted it, the system tried to resync to the failed disk again.

In my opinion (3) shouldn't have happened, but I have seen that before.  If it were up to me, the failed disk state would have been remembered by the system, and it wouldn't have attempted to sync to it again.

(If you wondering, I haven't been able to configure the alert message facility to send warnings emails to me)

What email provider are you trying to use?  gmail recently made a change that requires you to use an app-specific password (which also requires you to enable two-factor authentication).  yahoo also requires an app specific password.

Re: Time to swap out one of my Raid disks? RN 516 (6 bay)

I’ve always left it set to x-raid. Finished rescyncing after about 13 hours. I’ll leave the Nas on today and check the log all seems to be back to normal. I noticed there’s a system firmware update which I’ll apply as well.
Always knew that it was important to have the email alerts ., have tried several times over the last several years to have it work but never always came back with an authentication error.

Cannot send a test message. Check
authentication settings.
Code: 5008010001

I’ll look into your advice about change of the configurations setting. Thanks

Your starting screenshot tells a different story.  RAID-10 isn't a mode that X-RAID uses, and there is no green stripe through the X-RAID control.

Re: Time to swap out one of my Raid disks? RN 516 (6 bay)

Oh  okay thanks for that it’s certainly expanding when I add extra disks in so maybe that’s thinking of Flex raid not x-raid . i’m not technical in any sense when I have a problem I tend to fumble my way through it with the help of people like yourself. Anyway it’s fine as I said the email alerts are now working and that’s the main thing
