Unable to find or interact with ReadyNAS (possibly due to power outage)

Hello,

I'm currently experiences issues with my NAS and have been unable to find help for this particular issue on the forums.

Basic Info:

- Model: RNDU6000 (Ultra 6)

- Seagate SATA3 2TB 7200RPM Barracuda 64mb cache x 6

Issues:

- After an unexpected power outage which lasted a few hours I was unable to find or interact with my ReadyNAS device.

- NAS can't be found with RAIDar.

- NAS can only be powered on/off with the swtich on the rear panel, front screen panel only displays 'ReadyNAS'

- Power button on front panel does not work

What I have tried:

- Restarting device

- Holding power button down for a few seconds (does not turn off)

- Holding down the reset button (does not show menu option)

- Tested each disk individually with Seatools (all 6 disks passed SMART test)

- Tried to use USB recovery tool, nothing happened

-------------------------------------------------------------

I was going to try and open up the NAS next but before doing so I was hoping to get some help on this issue,

Cheers, Justin

Re: Unable to find or interact with ReadyNAS (possibly due to power outage)

I am thinking that there was a power surge when the power went out - and that damaged the NAS.  It could be the power supply (which can be replaced with some effort), or the system board (which cannot be).

Warranty is three years for the original purchaser - so you might want to check your warranty status if you aren't sure when you purchased.

You can migrate to an new OS 6 NAS - there is a way to mount the ultra volume (read-only) temporarily so you can copy it off to external storage.  That is outlined here: https://kb.netgear.com/29957/ReadyNAS-Migrating-disks-from-RAIDiator-4-2-to-ReadyNAS-OS-6-x86?cid=wm...

Re: Unable to find or interact with ReadyNAS (possibly due to power outage)

All the display needs is 5V power to display "ReadyNAS", so that's not much of a clue.  The power supply for the 6-bay units does have two separate 12V busses, and it sounds like one of yours may be toast.  The 5V standby power may be as well.  Unfortunately, power supplies that die due to power surges often take other components out with them.  Before you invest in a new supply and find it doesn't fix the issue, try this:

If you have a standard ATX power supply laying around or can scrounge one from a computer, you can open the NAS and connect that supply externally just for diagnosis or for data recovery if you choose to move to a newer NAS.  If it is just the supply and you want to fix it, there are threads in the community about replacing it.

Re: Unable to find or interact with ReadyNAS (possibly due to power outage)

Thanks for the help guys,

@StephenB Unfortunately the NAS is out of warranty, I bought it ~5yrs ago. It's probably time for an upgrade and the new OS 6 NAS looks more than suitable.

@Sandshark I don't actually have a standard ATX power supply handy though I would like to try that option before investing in a new device,

If you can bring the Ultra 6 back to life permanently it is possible to install OS6 on it, would be your cheapest option

Well, if it's only the PSU, then just bringing it back to life is the cheapest option

It makes sense to consider switching to OS6 of course, but the OP doesn't actually need that to solve their issue.

Agreed obviously but in the OP last post his solution seemed to be to purchase a new NAS with high expectation of OS6, which is why I pointed out that OS6 could be installed on his Ultra, if (s)he can breath life into it

I didn't read that post that way, it sounded more like the OP was only researching the replacement options.

Either way, an Rn42x or better OS6 NAS will be faster than the ultra (with either OS).  If it is only the PSU, then it can be inexpensively fixed, and it could either remain the main NAS, or it could be used as a backup NAS.

Re: Unable to find or interact with ReadyNAS (possibly due to power outage)

I didn't realise OS6 could be installed on my current model, I'm still waiting on getting a psu and If I'm able to bring it back to life I will install the new OS. Though I have a feeling that will not work, in which case I will be looking at getting one of the newer 6bay models.
