Pulled out my old ReadyNAS DUO V1, chucked 2 clean 2 TB disks in it and turned it on.
Stays on for about 20 seconds, power led blinking and then turns off.
Tried 1 drive only, booted with the reset pin in and made it do an OS reinstall. Worked fine, booted, no problems.
Pushed the second drive in, turns off after 20 secs. No log entry.
Removed 2nd drive, moved the working one to the other slot, boots fine. Put the other drive back into slot 1 while the unit was on, it turns off in about 5 secs.
Removed the "working" drive, turned the unit on. It OS Installed itself and works fine. Other drive back in, turns off.
So basically i've tested both drives in both slots but i cannot find any permutation where these 2 identical drives work. Individually they both demonstrably work in either slot, but together the unit turns itself off and never logs an error.
Definately sounds power related. If you get a new adapter, it isn't necessary to get a Netgear brand. The spec is 12V, 5A, and the connector is a standard one. Supplies listed as being for CCTV cameras (12V and with a 5A or more rating) work great. Ones listed as being for LED lighting may not provide power quite as well regulated.
If it's not the external adapter, then it's likely the internal DC-DC converter, which is not repairable/replaceable, though there is a slim chance it's the plug, which you could repair if you have the right equipment and skills.
