Upgrade Ultra 4
Hi,
I have and am very happy with my Ultra 4 but sadly it doesn't enable me to stream 1080p HD movies to my PS3 (via plex) and only manages to stream to my other devices with direct play (as soon as transcoding of 1080p is required it stops working). Obviously I should have gone with an Ultra 4 Plus but what should I do now given that upgrading the Ultra 4 CPU voids warranty and I haven't seen any details of this being possible.
Can someone confirm if upgrading the CPU is possible on the Ultra 4 (this is the riskiest, but most cost effective solution!)
If I was to upgrade to an Ultra 4 Plus or a Pro 4 is there more option to expand CPU in the future should that be required? Are there any new readynas product lines coming out in the near future I should be considering instead?
Thanks,
James

Re: Upgrade Ultra 4
Not possible, the CPU is soldered to the board. The Plus would be the same speed CPU but dual core versus single core, wouldn't be much of a boost for transcoding. You'd be better off with an Ultra 6 Plus with a Core2Duo CPU in it, much more power, and you could swap the CPU if desired. The Pro 6 is a safer bet, as the Ultra 6 Plus may get the 'atom treatment' upgrade revision like the 2 and 4 bays, using the cheaper embedded CPU.

Re: Upgrade Ultra 4 (and Pro 4)
Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but the wording above was a bit unclear. Is the Pro 4 CPU soldered on as well? Assuming it's socketed, I was looking at the Atom D525 for a slight boost in CPU speed, or even the D2xxx line like the D2750 for a 500 MHz speed increase, or the D2650 for VT-x.
This also depends on the motherboard capabilities of recognizing the newer chips, however.
