'Volume Degraded" error - and nothing happens

Hi everybody,

Out of the blue, the data volume (5x2TB RAID 6) started showing as degraded, without any other errors or attempts to recover.

I've restarted the system, and I got a 'resyncing' indication, but it then terminated as "volume resynced but still degraded".

Any ideas of what could be happening and to get out of this state?

None of the five HDD disappeared on the System -> Volumes view or on the System -> Volumes -> Settings -> Disks ?

Breaking news: again out of the blue, disk #5 showed up as 'Volume data-0' with the message "Remove the volume to use the disk".

I ejected disk #5, inserted it 10 seconds later, and it now started to sync again normally.

I'll keep you posted on the next episodes of this twilight zone story.

After the resync, can you post mdstat.log?  Just copy/paste it into a reply.

Also download the log zip file, and look for disk-related errors in system.log and kernel.log.

My guess is your drive 5 has errors.  Even if it successfully completes sync, check the SMART status and see if it's time to replace it.  Netgear's alarm points are not always ideal.

Whe is mdstat.log located?

Download the log zip file (From the log page of the admin web ui, or from RAIDar).  It's in there.

I know that... but I was curious about the “normal” location, as I didn’t find it on “/var/log”...

I don't think it is saved as a log.  You'll find some of it in

# cat /proc/mdstat

You can see the whole thing with

# mdadm --detail /dev/md*
