Volume Scrub duration

RN314 with 4x1TB drives, RAID 5

OS 6.9.3

Approx. 1TB free space

I have my unit configured to perform a volume Scrub twice each year: on January 1st, and July 1st.

The Scrub on January 1st took about 5.5 hours.

The Scrub that ran today began at 5:15a.m. and hadn't yet completed at 2:15p.m. The only real regular activity on this unit is TimeMachine. Other than that, I've not added (or removed) very much data. The only real difference is a newer version of the O/S. I'm at 6.9.3.

Had anyone had any experience with the length of time a scrub would take? The unit has 1TB of free space. Is it possible that the latest version of the O/S no longer posts a log entry when the scrub completes?

Hi @RupertGiles

Checking on your disks all your drives are fine. You may want to try disabling Quota on volume and see if there's any change in scrub time or performance.

Re: Volume Scrub duration

Hi @RupertGiles

For RN300 series I do think 5 hours or less should be normal run time for scrubbing 4x1TB. Do you have any performance issues when running scrub?

Another thing is to check on the logs for any issues on your disks. You can download the logs and look at smart_history or volume log.

You may want to check this thread as well for other users discussing about the lenght of Scrub maintenance.

Hope this helps!

@Marc_V already pointed you to a discussion thread on that.

There are two components to the scrub - one is a "btrfs scrub" which is done at the file system level.  The time that part takes does depend on the file system (fullness, etc).  The second component is a RAID scrub.  That part touches every disk block in the volume - it doesn't matter if the block is used or not.

If you are running 6.9.3, there should be a progress bar on the volume tab of the web UI that estimates when the scrub will be complete.

As far as time goes, my RN526 has a 4x6TB array, and normally takes about 40 hours to complete a scrub.  Simply scaling that down to 4x1TB would give a time between 6 and 7 hours.  There happens to be a scrub running at the moment, if there's a significant change in the running time I'll post back.

Re: Volume Scrub duration

Thanks for your replies.

The scrub took about 12 hours, as can be seen in the log entry. I wasn't aware of the progress bar. Next time the scrub runs (in January), I'll look for it.

Re: Volume Scrub duration

Hello Marc_V,

As far as I can tell from looking at the logs, there are no issues with the disks. The scrub did complete successfully, although it took nearly 12 hours.

Here's the log entry from the "Volumes" section:

data scrub 2018-07-01 14:26:33 2018-07-02 02:17:14 pass

The only performance issues I experienced during the scrub was that Time Machine wasn't able to run. This wasn't a major issue because I have other redundant backups: Arq, and Carbon Copy Cloner.

Re: Volume Scrub duration

Hi @RupertGiles

It would be best if you try and see if this will do the same on your next Scrub using the progress bar @StephenB mentioned. You can send in the logs if you want so we can try to check.

Guide to sending logs is in my Sig.

Re: Volume Scrub duration

You might look at the SMART statistics for your drives, just to make sure they are healthy.  There are a few places where they are stored, one is disk_info.log (in the log zip).

Re: Volume Scrub duration

Thanks so much for reviewing the logs from my RN314. At your suggestion, I disabled Quotas on the volume.
