Volumes not showing expected free space

So I'm a bit new.
I have a Netgear NAS 426 with 2, 4TB drives, I would expect free space to show somewhat less than 8TB. But it shows less than 4.
Why?
I'm guessing that it's storage for redundancy?
So if I want ~8TB of free storage space, I need 4, 4TB drives?
Please help, thanks.

With single disk RAID redundancy, the capacity rule is "Sum the drives and subtract the largest". So 2x4TB will give you 4 TB of storage. The NAS reports this in TiB (1024*1024*1024*1024 bytes), not TB (1000*1000*1000*1000 bytes). 4 TB is the same as 3.64 TiB.
3x4TB would give you 8 TB (~7.28 TiB).

Re: Volumes not showing expected free space
I was thinking something like that...
Thanks.
