Web file manage interface on a RN202

I recently "upgraded" from a ReadyNas Duo to a Readynas OS 6.x-based RN202. Stupid decision ever, but its done.

On the Duo, I had the ability to create a share on the Duo, give access rights to remote users and send them an http/https  link to the share. Depending on their access rights, they would have the ability to upload/download/delete files to/from the share. This was very handy to allow remote users to upload/download share that cannot be sent to emails and create a repository.

Remote users acessing the share would see a very simple but robust interface a picture of which is here: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/networking/display/netgear-readynas-duo_9.html (scrool down to the end of the article, the image of the interface is just below the words "Video files can only be sorted by directory." It seeems it's called a DLNA server.

How could I reproduce this with a RN202. This is my last attemps before I sent the RN202 to the trash bin where it belongs and go back to my precious Duo.

Please do not direct me to add-ons like Ajaxplorer/Pydio. I do not have a PHD in Linux apps and those add-ons are a nightmare to install not to mention understanding them.

Thank you.

Hi Almudena,

With OS 6, http (share access) can be used (closely similar to what you want) but without the options or tabs listed on this webpage. Also, setting up FTP (local/remote share access) is an option.

Kind regards,

I see why you are thinking that from the xbitlabs piece, but DLNA is actually something very different.  DLNA is one of several tools which allows you to play media saved on the NAS (photos, videos, music) on other devices.  It's not related to web file access.

I also have a duo (still in service) and an RN202.  In general the RN202 is much better - much higher performance, much more capacity, and more powerful apps. Unfortunately direct http (web) access to NAS files is quite weak in OS6, and I agree it that is much better on the duo.  As Brian suggests FTPS (secure FTP) is one option, and there are FTP clients with pretty good drag/drop interfaces.  FileZilla works quite well with both the duo and the RN202.

ReadyCloud is another way you can do controlled access with remote users via its web interface.  However, there are some changes Netgear is planning to ReadyCloud next month that will require migration for existing user accounts - it would probably be simpler if you wait until it relaunches.

If a shared repository that is synced across multiple user PCs would meet your needs, then Bit Torrent Sync might also work.

Re: Web file manage interface on a RN202

Dear Stephen,

Thank you very much. Not many people realise how good the Duo was in that area.

I want to avoid ReadyCloud. Not that it is not a good service, I actually never tried it. But I prefer not to have a third party between my NAS and my remote users.

The shared repository option will not work. My remote users shoud not have to install anything on their PCs. they should just have to click on a http(s) link, see the prompt asking for their username/password, login, and see the interface that allow them to upload/download/delete files that are on their PCs or in the share. If they have any thing to do beyond clicking on a link and login, such as installing someting, it will not work, plus I would then prefer to use One Note.

I am trying to set up Owncloud to see if it can approach what the Duo could do batuvekt, but I am afraid it won't be the case. I am investigating the FTP option thank you again.

I so miss my two Duos now that I "upgraded" to OS6.

Many thanks
