Weird Problem - ReadyNAS 314 - no volumes exist error but my shares show up and I can't access them

Greetings,

I'm not sure what caused this to happen but below are details of what is transpiring.

ReadyNAS 314

4 WD 2TB RED drives in X-RAID RAID 5 configuration

I can access the GUI

Volumes: Error states no volumes exist, only displays drive #1 and drive #4

Egnyte app shows as not installed anymore

No local accounts - only Egnyte cloud accounts

AD authentication enabled, mapped to cloud accounts

When I go to access the root IP of the device through Windows file sharing, I can see my shares listed by I cannot get access to them. I get an error saying the share is not accessible, I may not have permission to use this network resource. I cannot create a new local account on the device because the "Create User" button does not exist. I have tried to get into the boot menu using the reset button on the back of the device, but this does nothing. I was attempting to boot into test disk mode to see if it could see disk 2 and 3. It will only boot into normal mode, but every time it shows no volume and only disk 1 and 4 displayed.

Egnyte creates an "ELC" folder that I know I can repopulate by synicing to the cloud so that is not an issue. However, I have 2 other shares that I really need to recover data from that are stored locally on the device. I pulled drive 2 and attempted to read it with a USB external dock but Windows wants to initialize the disk - I don't want to do this because I don't want to lose the data. Since this is RAID 5 it only has 1 drive redundant failure.

How can I get the device to recognize drives 2 and 3 so that I might recover the data. OR, is there another way I can access the shares to copy data to another device and then rebuild the array later?

Thanks

Did you try shutting down and disconnecting the RN314 from power for a bit?  Some SATA errors might lock the bus interface.

If that doesn't work, then perhaps contact support.  You might need a data recovery contract (though it is possible that one of the missing drives can be reconnected to the array).

StephenB,

Thanks for your response. I did disconnect the device from power for 2 days, but once turned back on I have the same problem. I have an open ticket with Support but to date no resolution. All 4 disks are inserted but only disk 1, 4 are detected and I can still "see" the folders through Windows file explorer, but no access. Hopefully there is some way to force the device to recognize the drives without reformatting and losing all the data. Thanks

How did you solve it?

Hi carlfredrikm,

@fmcstit contacted support and there's no resolution yet. Probably this thread will be updated once its resolved.

Kind regards,
