What RAID mode should I use for best performance?

Hello!

Today my ReadyNAS Pro have 6 discs (4 discs in RAID5 and 2 discs in RAID1). All the discs are 1.5 TB versions from WD and Seagate. The volumes are filled to about 70% each. I have noticed that the read and write performance have degraded over the two years I have used the NAS. Can this issue be related to file defragmentation?

I'm now considering to create one large volume instead of having two smaller volumes. I want to use some kind of RAID where I have at least one redundant disc (like RAID5 or RAID6).
So my questions are
* What RAID mode should I use for best peformance (with 6 discs)?
* Is there any performance chart for the different RAID modes?
* Is there any performance penalty for RAID6 compared to RAID5?
* What about X-RAID, does it have any redundant disc?

I wasn't able to find any good answer when searching for this...

Thanks in advance!

Re: What RAID mode should I use for best performance?

x-raid2 single redundancy = raid 5
x-raid2 dual redundancy = raid 6

I would not expect any significant performance differences, but have not benchmarked them.

I personally use x-raid2 dual redundancy in my pro, for the extra data safety and peace of mind, which is way more important than any peformance difference, to me.
