Will not boot after upgrade to OS 6.4.2

While trying to update ReadyNAS OS to 6.4.2 my RN104 seemed to hang at the restarting screen for about 15 minutes.  I pulled the power plug and replugged.  It restarted and went through the firmware update procedure and seemd to be successful, howerever the display now says "page_address+8" and I can't access anything.

Any suggestions on recovery?

After doing the USB firmware recovery option, everything seems to be working just fine.

Re: Will not boot after upgrade to OS 6.4.2

Which firmware did you upgrade from?

Can you boot into volume read-only mode (a boot menu option), download the logs and send those in (see the Sending Logs link in my sig)?

Re: Will not boot after upgrade to OS 6.4.2

Greetings:

I have the same problem. I logged into the NAS (web link) for the first time in quite a while, and the NAS told me there was an upgrade available. I was 6.2.4, and the software informed me the latest was 6.4.2, so I clicked on the upgrade button, and now I have the dreaded page_address+8 displayed.

Per other threds, I have left it on overnight, and tried to log in again via the web interface (to disable apps), but have been completely without luck.

Can you explain how to get to the boot menu, as my manual isn't handy?

I also saw a method for overwriting the upgrade, but potentially with the loss of data, which I cannot afford. What options do I have?

Presuming I can get the system into boot menu and select read-only, which logs do you want, and where might I find them? I'll try this soon, and hopefully the answer will be self-evident.

Re: Will not boot after upgrade to OS 6.4.2

Booting into read-only mode was successful, and I found a way to get the logs. I also tried to disable, remove or otherwise thwart each listed app, but 3 of them were reluctant. The full zip of all the log files is listed as 562KB. Do you want it all, or just some specific files?

Re: Will not boot after upgrade to OS 6.4.2

I'm sorry that the last post was so big... delete it if it is of no use.

Other info that may be of use. When the NAS upgraded its OS, the antivirus was not updated (says it's 2.0.2, latest version is 2.0.4). I was able to disable all the other services except the antivirus, smb plus, and linux-dash. My understanding is there is a potential for interference between the new OS and the old antivirus. Should I upgrade the antivirus, or try something else?

Full log.zip file from my NAS is headed your way. Thanks in advance.

Re: Will not boot after upgrade to OS 6.4.2

Yes the full logs zip is what we are after. We never know what useful information to troubleshoot a problem may show up in unexpected places so it's best to have them all attached. Attaching the zip file like you have done is best.

On 6.4.2 you should disable the anti-virus service under System > Settings > Services then install the anti-virus hot-fix. The AV Plus app also should be updated.

Re: Will not boot after upgrade to OS 6.4.2

Thanks. I was trying under the Apps top level directory. I disabled the antivirus and am working on the link you provided. The two apps are uploaded, but while the system page listed the antivirus as not running, the app page says it was still running, and that there was still an upgrade for it. both are now uploaded and installed. On the systems page, antivirus only re-enables on if you check the "enable real time antivirus scanning" option. Is that expected?

On the Apps page, the antivirus still says 2.0.2, and suggests an update to 2.0.4. Is that something I should do now, or later or...?

What else can I do, or am I ready to reboot after that?

I don't have an AV Plus app running, as far as I can see. What is it?

Re: Will not boot after upgrade to OS 6.4.2

The AV Plus (Anti-Virus Plus) app is the app on the Apps page that you were referring to as being at the 2.0.2 version. You should update that to the latest version, yes. I don't think you would be able to update this in volume read-only mode though, but in normal mode it would be possible.

Re: Will not boot after upgrade to OS 6.4.2

So, if I understand correctly, it's reboot time, followed by logging in via web and going to the Apps page and updating the antivirus from 2.0.2 to 2.0.4? Hopefully no more "page_address+8"

Re: Will not boot after upgrade to OS 6.4.2

I powered it down and it is rebooting - taking a long time, but so far, no "page_address+8" message. the blue light is blinking and there are hard drive noises coming from inside, so I presume the disks are being checked in some manner as part of the reboot.

I now have web access to the NAS, although it is painfully slow (poor processor, busy busy busy!). I'll let you know when I get home what the status is. Off to work, and thanks for your help. Let me know if the log files I sent last night indicate anything else is amiss or in need of modification. I do a lot of tech, but the NAS world is new to me. Thanks for getting me up and running.

Re: Will not boot after upgrade to OS 6.4.2

Ok, all appears to be working. To recap, here is what worked for me...

shut machine down, restart in boot mode (follow link for your machine)

  http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/20898/~/readynas-%26-readydata%3A-boot-menu

I selected the "read only mode" per the instructions for my machine (from prior paragraph)

I then shut down the anti-virus...

"On 6.4.2 you should disable the anti-virus service under System > Settings > Services"

then I installed the anti-virus hot-fix (select files based on your machine)

  https://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/30436/

I then rebooted, as I was still in read-only mode.

Everything booted, and I was able (via web interface) to re-start anti-virus software

At this point everything is working for me. Hopefully it will work for the initial poster of this thread (sorry about the hijack).

Re: Will not boot after upgrade to OS 6.4.2

Thanks for the update kking85743.

CCaputo, if you have anti-virus enabled on your system hopefully this works for you too. You should only need to disable the anti-virus service before rebooting back to normal mode and should then be able to do the other steps after rebooting back to normal mode.

The anti-virus fix is included in the 6.5.0 firmware update which is currently in beta.
