adding extra disk to ReadyNas 3220
We use a readynas for backup
original we used 6 * 4 TB disk (X-raid) (to use 18 TB)
We recently added 5 extra disk (all 4 TB) because we were running out of diskspace
Automatically the raid 5 changes to raid 6 (Still X-raid) (all disk are ok, synch started en finished)
but there is not any extra diskspace.
Anybody know whats wrong?
Thanks in advance,
Marcel

Re: adding extra disk to ReadyNas 3220
OS 6 XRAID automatically switches to dual redundancy (RAID-6) when you add the 6th disk in a rackmount system. The idea here is that as the disk count grows, you are more likely to suffer from two simultaneous disk failures. The documentation isn't as clear on this as it might be, though there is a note on page 24 here: http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/READYNAS-100/READYNAS_OS_6_SM_EN.pdf
That means the 6th disk adds redundancy, and not space. So XRAID is working as designed.
Unfortunately you can't switch back to RAID-5 at this point. You'll either need to add another disk (which will expand), or
- switch to flexraid
- destroy your volume
- create a new RAID-5 volume
- reconfigure shares
- restore data from backup.
It's easier to purchase another disk.

Thanks, Thats what we thought. But i added 5 extra disks to the unit. Do we have to start anything to enlarge the volume? Marcel
Oops, I missed that you added five. Is it still working on the conversion from RAID-5 to RAID-6? That will take at least 24 hours, possibly longer.

The volume screen should tell you if it is syncing. You can also try using RAIDar and hover your mouse over the volume and disk icons.

Re: adding extra disk to ReadyNas 3220
Hello StephenB,
Synching is done (a few days ago) .
but:
situation now:
11 disk (each 4TB)
nothing changed in the capacity (totaal 18,2 TB)
it should be ~32 TB
raid is 6 (Xraid)
i found in the logs:

You might need Netgear's help on this (paid support via my.netgear.com).
