another CASUALTY, data lost by X-raid

Very distress, upset and disappointed after The Readynas duo wipe off my HDd for X-raid mirroring. 500G data was gone!!!!

It's too late now. Just remember it was very hard to find reference/info for expend volumn/storage space in Duo. There is no hard copy manual shipped with the unit which made me hard to understand the behavior of X-RAID on Duo.

I carefully unpluged my old hdd and pluged in my new hdd for initialtion. And I thought there would be seperate volumn created respectively in both disks. And I pluged the old hdd back in, which became a stupid mistake.

It wasn't clearly stated to the user that the READYNAS DUO, two bays + X-RAID, which only support redudancy or mirroring (no expanion at all!!!!) . For many ppl who simply want more storage space wouldn't know this. And you wouldn't expect the Duo would be such un-friendly to wipe out the 2nd hdd pluged into the bay without asking. It's a mere inferior design!!!!! Pls make the machine ask before doing the low level formating!

The experience with netgear has been very bad. First, it was the DGN2000 modem, over heat issue. And now it is the X-RAID with two bays system, READYNAS DUO!

The sync took place for just ten minutes (may have a chance the file table wasn't competely wiped off), and then I turn it off. just wonder my old disk would have a chance to be recovered by any software. I can't afford to pay for the recover service. It'd be helpful to know more info. I remember I successfully recovered some deteleted files in windows system using undelete software.

If you mean wiping the disk you added that's expected behaviour. http://www.readynas.com/forum/faq.php#Can_I_use_the_disk%28s%29_that_were_previously_used_in_a_PC%2F...
When you add a disk it needs to be wiped to be added to the array. And it goes without saying that important data should always be backed up.

The latest manuals can be found here: http://www.readynas.com/docs
For an explanation of X-RAID. See X-RAID — RAID for the rest of us. It works exactly the same as for the 4-bay units except with up to two disks. There is still vertical expansion (i.e. replace disks one by one to expand the volume. Note that adding a second disk to a single disk X-RAID volume adds redundancy so there is no horizontal expansion).

???
You should not have put the old disk back in. If you did, here's what you needed to do: power down, remove the disk(s) in the NAS (label order), put the old disk back in and start the NAS back up again. Monitor the progress in RAIDar (see downloads link in my sig). If a 10 minute countdown commences, such that when you click setup you are prompted to choose RAID modes power down immediately.

That's not true. You can still have vertical expansion (replacing disks one by one with higher capacity disks).

I agree the documentation could be better. My advice is if unsure with things like this is to ask on the forums or get advice from tech support first before you act.

It's expected behaviour to wipe a disk added to the NAS. There's no other way to add it to an existing X-RAID array.

Data recovery is probably unlikely to be possible. How was the disk formatted before you put it in the NAS?

Thanks mdgm! I appreciate your patience!

The last comment is to offer a printed manual to readynas users including FAQ!

The problem with a printed manual is that it could well be outdated before being read. It would be good if the installation guide clearly referred people to http://www.readynas.com/docs to get at the manuals.

Re: another CASUALTY, data lost by X-raid

Bit late to see this but I did a simliar thing (put a data disk in ReadyNAS Duo not realising it would be formatted)

I switched off ReadyNAS after a few minutes (when I realised what was happening)

The 1.5TB disk was NTFS format and Windows 7 recovered almost all the data! (Action - Disk put back in PC on internal SATA and reboot. During startup given option to check/rebuild/recover volume. Ran for about 10 hours overnight , with a long time just displaying permissions reset to default on almost 500,000 files)

Hope thats of use.

I actually used "Recover_linux" to recover the partial formated disk. It took the software at least 24hrs to check sector by sector and another 24hrs to back up them.

yugn you revived an ancient thread, but it gives me a chance to say something here:

I'm pretty smart about computers but got my ReadyNAS over a year ago (maybe two?) and it just runs & runs. Which means, I don't know much about it because I haven't had any problems with it that would require me to learn! But I do anyway visit here regularly, and one thing I HAVE learned, or at least observed, is that there are alot of folks here like mdgm who will patiently answer questions, and most importantly suggest links (or detail exact procedures) for any questions people might have about their systems.

Bottom line being if I have ANY problems with my NV+, or have ANY NEED to make changes to its operation, well by golly I'm gonna come here first and make sure I get advice so I don't mess it up!
