backing up files between 2 ReadyNAS RN31662D units, with one off-site

Running OS 6.10.3 on two RN31662D devices one local (on-site) and one remote (off-site). I am trying to set up the off-site unit as a backup storage device for fiies on the local device. I have attempted the Backup function on the admin page for each unit, both as RSYNC and RSYNC over SSH, without success. Attempting the latter (RYNC + SSH), I uploaded the same public key on each unit, using the same user name. Always received the message that the server could not be found, after clicking the "Discover" button next to the Host field in either RSYNC or RSYNC+SSH. WhenI filled in the Host field instead of clicking "Discover" (I was using either the Host Name or the IP address that appeared for the off-site until when I logged in to the admin page for the unit), the error codes I received were either 7077010011 "Unable to connect to host" (for RSYNC over SSH) or 7077010012 - "Invalid network name or permission denied" (for RYSNC), when I tested the connection. Any suggestions on how to get past this brick wall? I already have reviewed the earlier post https://kb.netgear.com/29929/ReadyNAS-OS-6-Setting-up-a-backup-job-with-rsync-over-SSH.%C2%A0 and https://community.netgear.com/t5/Using-your-ReadyNAS-in-Business/Remote-off-site-backup-between-to-R... without success. I cannot figure out what I am missing.

ZeroTier can be set up from the GUI. You first need to download the Netgear App version (which is based on a very old version of ZeroTier, but does still work (and I still use it). You can find it here: https://github.com/NAStools/zerotierone/releases . Use the Upload function on the Apps page to upload it to the NAS, and then enable it. You'll also need to set up an account at ZeroTier Central (https://my.zerotier.com/login )to assign the NAS to a ZeroTier network and maybe check ut some documentation.
There is a slightly newer version of zerotier (for Intel based systems only, as yours is), which is here: https://github.com/didyouexpectthat/zerotierone/releases/tag/readynas%2F1.2.4-nt1-RC1 . But, there's a bit of a catch-22 with it. It has no GUI of it's own, so you have to use SSH to configure it. And without a VPN already in place, you don't have an easy way to do that configuration remotely.

Re: backing up files between 2 ReadyNAS RN31662D units, with one off-site
You can't use the hostname or the local IP address of the remote NAS, as neither is routable over the internet. Instead you need to set up DDNS and use the DDNS name (which will resolve to the WAN address of the remote router). Port forwarding to the remote NAS IP address is then needed to get the rsync flow to the remote NAS.
Also, Discover won't work - it's only possible if the two NAS are on the same network.
Many Netgear routers include a free DDNS service, so you might check if your routers have that. There are some other free DDNS services out there, which you can find by googling them.
Another possibility here is to set up ZeroTier on the two NAS - then you would use the ZeroTier IP address of the remote NAS. You'd need to install the ZeroTier app on both NAS (and likely also one of your PCs), and get that set up. With ZeroTier, ordinary rsync would be enough, as the VPN would already be encrypted. Though there's no harm in using rsync-over-ssh.

Re: backing up files between 2 ReadyNAS RN31662D units, with one off-site
StephenB: Thanks. Given the current COVID-19 issues, can I install ZeroTier on the off-site NAS through its admin page, or is that something I have to do when I am on-site with it? Many thanks.
