Are you using the built-in backup in the admin web ui? If so, can you share the settings you are using?

BY locally connected USB drive, do you mean connected to the RN314?
If so, it should be as simple as Backup -> Add Backup.
Enter a Backup Name (Say USB Backup)
For the Source, press Browse, and shoose what you want to backup (The NAS Share / fodler you want to backup).
For Location, press Browse and choose where you would like to backup (The External USB Drive)
Hit Next.
On the next screen, set your schedule and any other options.
Then hit Finish, and you are good to go.
Is there something in particular that isn't working?
