Re: does corrupted boot usually mean bad HDD?
Is it a brand new NAS? Its not always the HHD, sometimes the DIMM is not seated properly or the flash image is corrupted.
This could also happen if the HDD has been used previously on a PC, etc.

the nas has been in service for over a year and sitting in a very secure area. I'll see if we can do a reinstall OS to bring it back up

OS reinstall sometimes do the trick, some occasions you'll have to do a USB boot recovery or just factory reset.

Do you have a backup?
A factory reset is a last resort especially if your backup is not up to date. There are further things that can be checked before resorting to doing that.
