is there easy way to downgrade the OS .. I searched and found option
in admin page to do so .. but it requires me to upload the file for it and I don't have the old OS ..
the issue is that I can't update my Plex app anymore ..

Indeed, sources.list.d seems to be a place where apps can put their own sources.list and not worry that an OS update will change them. On my VM with Docker installed, it's sources list is there, called docker-cli-rnapp.list. Don't do anything with them. You need to put apt.conf and the updated sources.list in /etc/apt.

You can get it from here:
Best to extract it from the zip file before you upload.

Unfortunately, download back to 6.10.9 likely won't be enough. I believe you will find that you will need to update the two files in this thread:
You can download them from post 37 in the thread.
If you enable SSH on the NAS, you can then install them using WinSCP on the PC. If you set the protocol to SFTP, you should get access to the /etc folder from that GUI. This approach doesn't require knowledge of SSH commands.

You need to enable ssh in the NAS in order to get sftp to work. Make sure you enable password authentication when you do that.
Also, log in as "root", not as "admin". But still use the NAS admin password.

Re: how to downgrade my NAS firmware from 6.10.10
So apt.conf.d is a directory, not a file. I don't run OS6.10.10, though maybe I do need to put it on a virtual machine to investigate. Is this the new home of sources.list, or is there still one at the level above? What are the contents of that apt.conf?
I'm thinking that Netgear may have created apt.conf.d as a safe place to put mods to sources.list and apt.conf that don't get over-written by an OS update.

I would like to thank both StephenB and Sandshark
for their solutions and effort they put in this forum your contributions are tremendous
I solved the upload issue and I manage to upload the Plex app
I hope there is a button in setting to turn off the update OS for good and for now on
it must not be updated for good .because it keeps popping up when you log in to admin page .
Regards

Re: how to downgrade my NAS firmware from 6.10.10
Hello friends,
Thanks for finding a solution to the problem.
Unfortunately for me, i have followed the instructions but still get an error message - "apps operation failed" when I try to update my Plex.
I downgraded to 6.10.9, renamed the apt.conf.d to apt.conf.d.orig, renamed the sources.list that is already in the folder to sources.list.orig, added the mods to the /etc/apt folder and tried updating my Plex.
Please is there any step I am missing?
@Sandshark @StephenB any help will truly be appreciated.

Maybe try installing the deb file from ssh? That would give a more informative error.
You could also look in apt-install.log and apt-history.log in the log zip file, the error details should also be in there.

Re: how to downgrade my NAS firmware from 6.10.10
Nothing in the instructions tell you to do anything with apt.conf.d. apt.conf probably doesn't exist on your NAS prior to this. After you make the changes, you also need to do an apt-get update.

Re: how to downgrade my NAS firmware from 6.10.10
Update:
After restoring to factory settings due to the issue that was keeping my volume in read only, I downgraded to 6.10.9 and it allowed me install Plex from the featured apps section. Was also able to update Plex with a .deb file without having to use the mods. Thanks again for your help.

The mods are needed whenever the deb file requires a new library. Plex doesn't at the moment, but future updates might.
