max volume size and disk size
Does the 2120v1 have any limits on disk size use (like a 16TB voume limit) as this is old unit and is ARM based (cpu is a bit slow as its the V1 version) even with OS 6.10.3 i would have thought ...
You tried to update to 6.2.what? There is this warning in the release notes.
- ReadyNAS 102, 104, and 2120 systems must not be updated directly to 6.10.x from 6.3.x or older firmware. They must first be updated to either 6.2.5 or 6.3.5 then to 6.5.2 and then to 6.10.x.
I purchased a used unit with very old firmware, and the online update path followed the above restrictions, so it should only be an issue of you are updating manually from a downloaded file.
USB recovery does not utilize the boot menu, see here:How-do-I-use-the-USB-Recovery-Tool-on-my-ReadyNAS-OS-6-storage-system#Rack-mount_ReadyNAS . So, you can still give that a try. Note that USB3 drives and anything over 8GB is unlikely to work, and in general the older, the better.

ok i guess my other big post is been put on mod filtered allow
but managed to make it consistently break now, if the unit is powered up without a disk inserted the unit becomes permanently dead after the second reboot (get the odd 3 flashing lights again error light and 2 network lights), but if i put a disk into the unit and manage to get into the boot menu timing correctly and just pick normal boot (network 2 light selection) it works fine again
there still might be a fault with the NAND flash, unless this is normal behavior if there is no disk inserted
