multiple ReadNAS users on multiple NAS

When I have multiple NAS and multiple users each having a ReadyNAS account on a frist NAS, each user gets a personal share on that first NAS.

How to arrange that all personal share are replicated to the other NAS as a backup without being able to look into the personal share of other users?

Can all ReadyNAS user accounts create a ReadyCloud account and somehow connect to each NAS. This would mean that is there are for users, each of the NAS would be a device in each ReadyCloud.

I believe in ReadyCloud the settings can be changed, thus, not only the admin, but also "normal"  users could change settings like volumes, RAID and what have you.

You can set up a backup job which backs up the home folder on each NAS to a share on a different NAS.  The destination share's security can be set up to allow only admin access.  If you have x86 ReadyNAS you can do this with ReadyDR backups.

Note this is a backup - not two-way synced, or set up as a NAS cluster of some kind.  It doesn't allow a user to access either NAS, with changes on either automatrically propagated to the other.  So each user would need to be using one NAS (either one), with their files backed up on the other.

Note that if you back up to USB drives, everything on that drive is fully accessible.

I don't use ReadyCloud, and it might have changed since I last tool a look.  But I believe only the NAS administrator can create a ReadyCloud account for a NAS (and ReadyCloud won't give those accounts access to admin settings).

These ReadyCloud accounts are for each NAS - they are not joined into a domain of some kind.  Also local NAS accounts can't be linked to ReadyCloud accounts (so if you have both, you'd have two separate home folders).

If you don't have a lot of users, you should consider create ordinary shares for each (with appropriate security).

Thanks Stephen,

I am left with a couple of questions though.

In this scenario, who is "You" in you can set up? Is it the admin, or is this each individual user?

I am confronted with a group users that will never set replications/backups etc. I also want to maintain "zero knowlegde": even the admin does not have access to the data (either the source or the copy by replication) unless it is encrypted.

Which back up to the USB are you referring to: a function to back up build in in the ReadyNAS software?

Every user will most certainly get a personal share, because everyone will have his/her own local NAS account.

Re: multiple ReadNAS users on multiple NAS

There is no simple or built-in way to accomplish what you want;

- real-time sync of user shares between multiple nas (with all user data in the shares syncronised amongst all the nas)

You can syncronise username/passwords, either via windows active domain directory, or by having each user create a mynetgear login.

Your mynetgear users are not admins, but you add/invite them to your nas to access shares via the share permissions. They can also get their own private user share associated with the mynetgear login.

Of course neither of these will sync the user DATA that is in the share.

I think when Stephen refers to backup, he means a one way copy of data, not a two-way sync between the nas's.

All that said, there is an egnyte service that can provide syncronization between different nas's creating a sort of private cloud, but it is not a free service, and it's usefulness is dependant on the type of data your trying to syncronize.

Yes, and I tried to make that clear.  The backup jobs would be set up by the NAS admin.

That is up to the NAS admin, since the admin can disable SMB on the home folder in the web ui.
