I've be a pretty happy user with my ReadyNAS Duo (v2). My firmware is the latest (4.3.4). On 95% of my files / folders (NAS Specific) I can read & write. There are a select few (they don't appear to have a pattern) I can read, but I cannot move files into a specific folder on my NAS. I cannot delete unwanted files (selected folders, not universal). I do receive the following message:
"Destination Folder Access Denied"
In my "log" -- it now shows I have 39 "reallocated sector count" (I think that means bad sectors??). If that were the case, is that a lot? Which drive is it?
I've read about setting permissions, I just didn't understand. If I could get more detailed info (if that is the precieved issue) would be appreciated. Any ideas on what to do?
Lastly, on my PC, I frequently run defragging & anti-virus products -- is there a way to do this for the NAS (can I)?
4.3.4 would be the RAIDar version (PC app) not the firmware version (5.x.x).
Reallocated sectors are bad. As are "current pending sector". If the sum reaches 50 or more, you should certainly replace the disk. If the counts have suddenly increased, that would also be a reason to replace the drive sooner rather than later.
If you can connect the drive to a Windows PC, I suggest shutting down the NAS, removing the drive, and testing it with vendor tools (the "long test"). That would be Seatools for seagate, Lifeguard for western digital. Often times these tests will flush out more bad sectors.
On the defrag/antivirus - these are both available on the new OS6 platform, but not on the older v2, v1, x86 products. You can't defrag from the PC, but your PC antivirus software might be able to scan a network drive. Performance will not be great when it is active...
There is a procedure for resetting permissions here: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detai ... v%2B-v2%3F I'm not sure what information you need. However, if you can't delete/rename unwanted files, it is the first thing to try.
In process of updating firmware. In your opinion, are my problems related to one of the drives going? Some setting that I invariably messed up (I rarely go into frontview).
Assuming a drive needs to be replaced: How can I determine which one?
Also, I have a Seagate 1.5Tb (not on the list). Since I am out of warranty (NAS) and already own the drive ($0.0) -- I'd like to use it. How many problems am I asking for if I do use it (Others are Seagate 1Tb; other that I am not going to mirror 33% of the 'new' drive -- anything else or is this just a bad idea all the way around?
Turns out I have v1 (model is "RND2110v2 but hoem page of front view as well as name plate say "ReadyNAS Duo" (no v2)).
Updated firmware -- no luck. Still can't access certain folders. Will try permissions again. Sorry, didn't understand it all that well. Will report back. Thanks for your help and comments.
I've tried to reset permissions via going to shares / CIFS / and then resetting to "disable" (apply) then back to "read/write"
The link you sent was for the v2 not v1 which I incorrectly told you I have. Trying to scan through the forum but I am not finding anything (yet). Ideas?
Click on the "Advanced Options" Tab on the upper right. Set the Share Folder Name to nobody, and the Share Folder Group to nogroup. Set Share folder group rights and everyone rights to read/write Check the box next to "Set ownership and permission..." The click on "Apply" at the bottom right. The box next to "set ownership" will clear, and after a bit there should be a pop-up telling you it is finished.

Lastly -- to switch the drive -- not on the list; what do you think? I'df have a good backup & cloud backup (duo backup's) ???
Check the HCL again using the Duo (w/o the v1), since the v1 and v2 lists are quite different.
I suggest that you search the forum for the drive model you want to use - if you see a lot of bad press, then it is a drive best avoided, even if it is on the HCL. Many of the newer Seagate drives don't seem to work out so well.
If your Seagate is a ST31500341AS, then it is likely ok. I had several in my Pro-6 for a while (though that is x86, not v1), and still have one there. If you are buying new drives at some point, check out the WDC Red series.
