readynas NV+ Kernal Panic and bad disc

Hello

I have an old ReadyNAS NV+ with two seagate drives.

the model is RND4250.  I've seen on other posts people being asked what version bios it has and whether support mode is an option from the boot menu. It is.

The file I've put on the USB for USB boot/bios update is 'RAIDiator-4.1.16'.

This used to belong to a company I worked for, and I can't remember if I then used it for personal data once I 'inherited' it (the company no longer exists).  My intention was to set it up, check if there was any data I wanted, then wipe the disks and sell it.  However, I can't get it to boot.

It hangs on booting.  I've tried to boot from USB and it goes into kernal panic, I've tried updating OS and it goes into kernal panic and I've tried full factory reset (I'm pretty sure there isn't any data on here that I don't have elsewhere).  This either goes into kernal panic or found bad disk 1 if I have just one of the disks in (same with either disk).

So at this stage I don't mind physically ruining the drives and disposing of them, then selling the NASgear empty, but I wouldn't want to sell something that I knew didn't work.  What can I do at this stage to try and get it up and running, or is this a lost cause?

Hopefully I've given enough information, do ask if I can tell you anything more.

Many thanks, Jo

Try removing the disks and power up.  Then confirm that the LCD display gives you a "no disks" status.

If that works, then you can try zeroing one of the disks.  Connect it to a Windows PC (either with a USB adapter/dock or SATA).  Use vendor tools (e.g., Lifeguard for WD; Seatools for Seagate).  Then power up the NAS with only that disk installed, and it should do a factory install.

Assuming success, the next step is to confirm that all the slots work - by powering down the NAS, move the disk to slot 2, power up, etc.

If you want to sell the NAS with the disks, then zero all the disks, put them all in the NAS, power up, and it will do a second factory install.

Re: readynas NV+ Kernal Panic and bad disc

thank you for the detailed reply.

I had a blank disk that I tested, and that also hangs on booting. I'm now trying a factory reset with that one installed, but I suspect it has hung as well.  I'll give it a couple of hours.

The blank disk was in a caddy for using as an external HDD, but I don't have a USB-B cable for it, so I have one on order. When that arrives I can blank the original NAS' drives and see if they play.

Assuming they dont (as the spare blank drive I had didnt), what would be the next step?

thanks, Jo

What status did you see when booting up w/o disks?

What size was the blank disk (your NAS can't handle drive > 2 TB)?
