readynas duo2000 cat not boot after firmware upgrade
[background]
when i got one ReadyNAS Duo 2000 v1, the firmware version is 4.1.7, and then i upgrade to 4.1.16, because there is no SSH, so i decide to downgrade to 4.1.3(I think there must has ssh in 4.1.3) , but still no ssh in 4.1.3 when i log in to admin webpage. so i try 4.1.4. when i upgrade from 4.1.3 to 4.1.4, after reboot, it can not boot any more.
[problem]
when i plug power and press power button, only the power light(act light) and backup light very quickly blink once(green color), and then dark, all four lights are dark, and fhe fan is keeping full speed.
if i unplug the power, hold the reset and plug the power and press power button, to try to go to boot menu. such as to to default factory model, it doesn't work any more. no response.
appreciate if anyone can help. i hope i can save this machine..

What you should have done after upgrading to 4.1.16 was install the ssh add-on (found here: https://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/ReadyNAS/ADDON/4.2(X86)/EnableRootSSH_1.0.bin )
Going back to 2009 firmware (4.1.3, 4.1.4) from 4.1.16 was a big mistake. Not sure if a factory default will restore access, or if you need to find an ancient browser (or both).
What status is RAIDar giving you for the NAS? https://kb.netgear.com/20684/ReadyNAS-Downloads#raidar

Re: readynas duo2000 cat not boot after firmware upgrade
Hi Stephen,
thanks much! currently, the machine can not boot any more, if i try to restore factory default, it doesn't work. becasue when i plug the DC power cable, no matter i press the reset button or not, when i press the power button, the four LEDs(power, disk1, disk2, backup) quickly blink once(green color),and then all LEDs turned dark and fan is full of high speed, no response any more.
is this machine damaged? i really hope if i can fix the problem... thanks stephen for your help..

Is there any data on the NAS that you care about?
If there isn't, then try removing both drives, and power up. Then see if RAIDar detects the system, and shows you a "no disks" status. IF it does, also let us know what firmware it is showing you. https://kb.netgear.com/20684/ReadyNAS-Downloads
What drives are you using? I don't recall exactly when 4.1.x firmware supported 2 TB drives, and if you are using something larger than 1 TB that might be a problem. I do know that 4K sector alignment showed up in 4.1.7, and you have downgraded below that.

Re: readynas duo2000 cat not boot after firmware upgrade
Hi Stephen:
there is no data need to backup. RAIDar can not detect the system even i remove both drives. (my drive is 1TB / per disk)
no matter I hold reset button or not, when i power up the machine, fan is running with highest speed and all LEDs are dark.
this machine previously is running very well in 4.1.16, when i downgard to 4.1.3, it also can successfully boot up and i can login to its admin page. only when i upgrade from 4.1.3 to 4.1.4, it can not boot up any more.
I use Raw32 to write 4.1.16 img into a USB (4GB), and i plug USB into front usb slot, press the power button and hold for almost 1 minutes, nothing happened and it seems not work. i'm not sure whether i adopt the right way to boot from USB. thanks for advicing...

This looks like the correct process (described here: https://kb.netgear.com/21400/RAIDiator-4-1-USB-Recovery-Tool )
As the article notes, you might need to try a different drive. Generally older ones seem to work better/

Re: readynas duo2000 cat not boot after firmware upgrade
Thanks Stephen..
it says: "Press and hold the power button on the front for approximately 20 seconds:
- you'll see all the disk LEDs blink at 5 secs, 10 secs, 15 secs, and 20 secs.
- Release the button right after the 4th blink.
- This will start the USB boot recovery process.
i will try to find another old usb to try. but i think when i hold the power button, no LED blink at all, all dark and fan is running with high speed. i think whether there is some kind of problem before boot from USB. such as some kind of native built-in boot loader (such as so called some kind of "BIOS") in ReadyNAS is damaged? if so, whether there is any way to repaire it...? thanks much 🙂

Re: readynas duo2000 cat not boot after firmware upgrade
Do you have files on the NAS that you want to preserve?
@robert002 wrote:

Normally the fan will start at high speed when the NAS is first powered up, and isn't throttled until the NAS completes the boot. So that part is normal.
No LEDs when you hold the the power button isn't normal though. Did you try running the factory reset process (pages 15-16 here: https://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/RND2110/Duov1_NV+v1_HW_en_06Dec11.pdf) That will destroy any data on the NAS, so if there is something on it you need to offload then try the OS reinstall instead.
@robert002 wrote:

Nothing really that can be repaired. Failed memory can be replaced, and of course you can also replace the power adapter.

Re: readynas duo2000 cat not boot after firmware upgrade
Try to find a USB flash with an access LED so you can see it it's being accessed at all. It is possible that something else happened completely independent of the firmware update/downgrades, but it seems unlikely. Do you know that the front USB port was working before all this? That could certainly complicate things.

Re: readynas duo2000 cat not boot after firmware upgrade
i feel frustrated when i replaced another memory and another power adapter, it is still same problem. i find that even if i remove memory, it is still same problem. i don't know what can i do for it... is there any problem for battery in the board (need to replace the battery in the board)?

Re: readynas duo2000 cat not boot after firmware upgrade
the front USB port is wokring good before. but i think it looks the problem before booting from USB drive. because when i power on (no matter how i press and hold reset buttor or press and hold power butter), no LED at all, it seems it does not go to USB booting step.
