recurring resync - why is it happenin / nothing in logs??
hi,
my unit seems to we resynching on a weekly basis (at least according to front panel), but there is nothing in the logs or volume information that tells me why?
all HDD's show green on status tab (health)
on volume tab it shows resynch, but again all HDD's show green, as does volume
finally, there is NO information in logs whatsoever that refer to the rebuild at all
any suggestions, and is there a way to get a deeper view into logs as the unit seems to want to do this for some reason?
TIA
D

Do you have disk scrubbing scheduled?
There is a bug in 4.2.19 where this will happen weekly regardless of the frequency you have it set to.

yes i do, i have both scrubbing and consistency checks running weekly.
should i disable it and see if this still happens, and any idea on when an updated RAIDiator will be released to fix it?

disagree - i've been running this since i got the unit, and the front panel has not say RAID resynch ever before or shown rebuild on status page

Well, I hate to disagree, but all of mine have always shown resync during a scrub

has that been the case with all versions of RAIDiator, or just the current one? it is possible, for whatever reason that the rebuilds are now taking longer / have changed behavior which would cause the LED to reflect this into working hours.
the check/resync starts at midnight, and takes days to complete on this large a volume. do you think that might be possible?

Re: recurring resync - why is it happenin / nothing in logs?
it has always been the case ever since I've had my original pro business. In fact I have posted in the past regarding the display and the confusion it causes regarding resync vs scrubbing.
the larger the volume the longer it takes, but but I would not expect it to take more than 5-8 hours under normal circumstances.
have you recently expanded your volume, or is near full? perhaps also you have a drive that is near failing and slowing down read/write access.
of course if your nas is busy with regular access (running VM's or users or backup jobs etc), the resync is a low priority job and will take much longer.
FWIW, I long ago had changed my scrub to be once every 8 weeks, and filesystem check to be weekly.
As you may be becoming aware, scrubs/resync/expansion puts alot of heavy use on the drives.
This can either cause, or catch a failing drive early, depending on your view.
I would check your SMART status in the health section of frontview and see if any drives have anything abnormal or way over what the other drives have.
You could also power down the nas, then hook each drive up to a PC sata connection and run WD diags to see if any are having problems.
In any case, you may want to look into getting a spare drive just in case. Raid 6 does help provide resistance against disk failures, but multiple drive failures can occur and no raid is a substitute for backups of important data.
