slow ReadyNAS Duo v1

Hello everyone,

I am trying to find a sollution for a friend of mine, who owns a ReadyNAS Duo v2. He has his own business, and uses the NAS to store his files. Connecting to the NAS from the laptops there takes a while. It takes a while for the file list to load, and even longer opening the files.

Next time I am visiting him I will try the following to find out where the problem is:

- Check whether the cables are Cat5e, not Cat5.
- Plug NAS directly into laptop

The NAS is connected to a SITECOM LN-121 v1.001, which is connected to the modem. I do not know the brand and make of the router. They already tried plugging the NAS directly into the modem, but that did not make any difference whatsoever.

Do you have any ideas? I have never seen the settings of a ReadyNAS before, so I do not know whether or not it could be a setting in the menu.

I will also bring my own laptop, since they all use the same laptop there.

If you need more information, please do not hesitate to ask.

Thank you all in advance!

Matt

Re: slow ReadyNAS Duo v2

I suggest you measure performance with Nastester (http://www.808.dk/?code-csharp-nas-performance).

Also, that you should begin by confirming that it is a v2 (and not a v1). The labels are confusing, use this guide: http://www.rnasguide.com/2012/01/09/how ... -or-nv-v2/

It would also be helpful to know the firmware version.

Re: slow ReadyNAS Duo v2

Dear StephenB,

Thank you for your swift response. The label at the bottom of the NAS states it is a v2 with firmware version 4.1.5. On the label is also noted (with some Asian markings in front) "NGR-RND2000 (B)". As per the link you've stated, due to the FW version, it would make it the v1.

I don't have access to the device at this moment, so I can't confirm it with hardware specs.

I will run Nastester when possible.

Re: slow ReadyNAS Duo v2

It is a v1 (despite the confusing label). Current firmware is 4.1.13 (which includes many bug fixes, including some important security fixes). Read speed on a gigabit network should be ~25 MB/s using SMB.

A newer entry level NAS (the RN102) would give 3x the performance for a single user. If there are several simultaneous users, then an RN312 would be the appropriate new model.

I don't think they want to switch to a newer model just yet, since they just acquired this NAS.

Can I just simply update the firmware to the newest version? And where can I find the correct firmware?

I have sent my friend an email to check, just to be certain, which NAS he has, and also to run the Nastester. As soon as I hear back from him, I'll notify you in this topic.

Re: slow ReadyNAS Duo v2

My friend confirmed it is a v1 indeed.

Tomorrow evening he will get busy with the Nastester. As soon as I hear back from him, I'll post the results here.

Re: slow ReadyNAS Duo v2

There is an update check built into frontview, that should locate the current firmware

You can also download it from http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detai ... 28sparc%29 and manually install it. If you do that you need to unzip the download (you don't install the zip itself).

I get 16.36 MB/s write and 24.97 MB/s read on a wired gigabit connection.
