Device name conventions and firmware upgrade
Just did an upgrade to firmware 6.8.0.
Received this warning message “The host name contains illegal characters. This may cause undefined behavior when using some network services. Please change the host name using only valid characters (A-Z, a-z, 0-9, -).”
'Device_ThisModel' is an example of our name assignment protocol.
Note that there is an "_" (underscore) character in the name. We have a number of these devices and they seem to work well. Renaming them will be a big PITA.
Is it necessary?
What will we loose if we do not rename them.

Re: Device name conventions and firmware upgrade
Underscores have always been illegal in hostnames, though many implementations didn't check for it.
I suspect that most devices will handle the underscore correctly, but some might not. If you aren't seeing any issues now, you might well be ok w/o changing your naming scheme.

Re: Device name conventions and firmware upgrade
Underscores are allowed in DNS naming but not Hostnames -- I guess you learn something every day.
Thanks
