Error Volume data Raid Level 1, Not Redundant

Firmware 6.5.2

But there is an error saying Volume Dta: RAID level 1 , Not Redundant; 679.5GB (38%) of 1.8 TB used.

RAIDar -> admin -> system -> overview says that the system is degraded.

RAIDar -> admin ->  system -> volumes shows two disk - RAID 1. Data 270.62GB; Momentual 408.86GB; available 1.18GB: type RAID 1.

Unfortunately I do not have a high skill experience to understand what is wrong.

Anybody who could help me?

Thanks.

A surge could have created some damage.  Do you use a UPS?

The WD Red has a 3-year warranty, so you can RMA it.  Western Digital will send you a recertified replacement, not a new disk.  I'd probably do the RMA, but also buy a new replacement disk for the NAS.  Then either use the RMA replacement somewhere else, or keep it on hand as an emergency spare.

Re: Error Volume data Raid Level 1, Not Redundant

The messages say disk 1 is failing (data can't be read) - I'd replace it.

You could get more details by downloading the log zip file and looking in disk_info.log.  Another way to confirm disk health is to test the disks in a Windows PC with Western Digital's lifeguard.

How old is the disk?

Re: Error Volume data Raid Level 1, Not Redundant

Thank you Stephen. I bought the first disk in Sep 2014.

I had quiet a number of spikes and surges because of tripping of the electric circuit. Maybe that has to do something with it?

Re: Error Volume data Raid Level 1, Not Redundant

Thanks Stephen.

This really was very helpful as you showed me things I didn't know.

I was able to create a RMA and will also buy a new replacement.

Re: Error Volume data Raid Level 1, Not Redundant

It seems that I have lost about a 1TB on data on disk 1. I can see the folders in explorer but when clicking on NETWORK-->NAS, it says the folder is empty.

RAIDar : RAID level 1 inactive, ; 0 MB (0%), of 0 MB used. I just loaded one disk to backuo the data.

System status is healty.

Volumes: Inactive disk, red colored with a green indicator.

If I load two disks, both disks are colored red with a green indicator.

I have created a RMA. Before I send back this drive is there a way to recover the data?

Re: Error Volume data Raid Level 1, Not Redundant

The snippet you posted is on the OS partition (which is formatted as ext on the RN100 series), not the data partition (which is btrfs).

Netgear has a data recovery service, you could try that.  They will charge (and data recovery is expensive).  There are some software packages you could also try - but I haven't used any, so I cannot recommend one.

Re: Error Volume data Raid Level 1, Not Redundant

Thanks Stephen. Really appreciate your help.

Things changed. Now it says that the system is healthy and it sees both the disks. But it didin't see any volumes at first. So I created one "Test" and it needed 4 hrs to sync.

There seems to be 32.81MB on data on the disk but in explorere it says that the network drive doesn't have any folders. It drives me crazy.

If I click on the disks in admin/volume page, I cannot do anything.

What would you recommend. Just to send back both teh disks or do a factory reset on the ReadyNas? Thanks for your help.

Re: Error Volume data Raid Level 1, Not Redundant

The btrfs file system will show some space allocated even if the volume is empty.  So that part is normal.

Can you download the logs, and look at the disk_info.log?  You can post it here (removing the two serial numbers if you like).

If both disks look healthy, I'd do a factory reset next (since there was file system corruption in the OS partition earlier on).  But I think we should confirm disk health first.

Re: Error Volume data Raid Level 1, Not Redundant

The load cycle count on the first drive is way too high for a WDC Red - something is odd there.

I think I'd try the reset anyway, but maybe repost the stats again after the reset completes.

Re: Error Volume data Raid Level 1, Not Redundant

After doing a Factory Reset (with 2 other new disk, - trying not to lose any data from the previous marked corrupted disk meant for RMA), the newest firmware (6.6.0) was installed automatically and the stats are:

Successfully completed diagnostics System

  • No errors found.

Logs

  • No errors found.

The system is resyncing which will take another 3 hrs. After that I will try to replace the two disks with just the one which is meant for RMA to see if I could recover data.

Good news is that the REadyNAS is accesible again through the File Explorer.

Just make sure the NAS is powered down when you switch the disks.  I'd label the new ones by slot (not strictly necessary, but does no harm).

I hope you can recover data.

Re: Error Volume data Raid Level 1, Not Redundant

Unfortunately the RMA disk is no longer readable.

It is packed to be shipped.

Thanks for all the great help and information. It was a pleasure.
