Re: How to use my NAS

Finally, after resetting the settings in system. (SMB)

and enable apply and disable apply for everyone in MAP Music.

I could reach the NAS by \\192.168.0.11 in explorer.

So after two years the NAS is working in our house.

To morrow I will try to get it working from outside.

Thanks @JennC and @StephenB for your help

Re: How to use my NAS

We need a bit more information on what you want to accomplish.

Are these users on your local network, or do they need to access over the internet?

What computers/operating systems are they using?

Re: How to use my NAS

First thing what needs to be up and running is the network connection at home.

This morning it was working on my surface Windows tablet.

After rebooting the tablet, there is no connection any more, and i want to connect but i do not know how.

Re: How to use my NAS

Download RAIDar 6 if you don't have it installed already.  Use it to discover the IP address of your NAS (if you don't know it).

Then try entering \\ipaddress into windows file explorer.  The direction of the \\ matters.

Re: How to use my NAS

On the windows surface tablet, i do.

mstsc.

as computer: \\192.168.0.11

user "my wife" (and yes she is a local user on the NAS.

ther is a message (in dutch) that there is 1. no extern access to the server, 2. is not on, 3, not in the network.

But when i go to the 192.168.0.11 in IE then I can logon as admin.

So the server is on and into the network

Re: How to use my NAS

And now after three hours of waiting and trying, the tablet is connected with the NAS.

Strange, I do not know why and I do not know how.

after mstsc with the \\ i have tried to connect with // and yes, that was wrong.

But after that action it was working.

I am a little bit afraid to switch of the tablet again. I will try it again in the evening.

Re: How to use my NAS

Hello, Here I am again.

I have switched off the tablet Windows surface

restart the tablet, and guess what?

No connection with the NAS.

I have tried the steps as shown before and it is again not working.

I do not have any idea how to connect again to the NAS.

And yes, the admin function is still working on the NAS

Re: How to use my NAS

Hello Bouwe,

First thing you need to check before accessing the NAS is the tablet's getting on the Internet and connected to the LAN via wireless.

If it is getting online and connected to your network then you should be able to map the NAS.

Try doing this steps about mapping the NAS IP: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/12241/~/accessing-readynas-os-6-using-windows-explorer

This should save a drive letter to the desktop of the tablet that will auto direct to the NAS' share/s.

Re: How to use my NAS

At  this moment I have created several maps on the NAS.

But nobody can use them.

I have also shared one map \\nas\give_it_name on the windows tablet and on my laptop.

This is the only map we can use and i have moved all the maps on the nas to this directory

Everybody in our house can use this map.

It is not possible (Netgear won't tell me how) to reach the map from outside.

Re: How to use my NAS

Strange, strange, strange.

I have now installed also ready cloud on my laptop.

and quess.

when I open Ready Cloud and I go to one of the maps which where showed.

Explorer opens and I can see all the maps on the NAS.

When I close the explorer and open a new explorer, the maps on the NAS are gone.

So I should always work by using the ready Cloud?

Re: How to use my NAS

Hello Bouwe,

Are you referring ReadyCloud app?

When you map the NAS, it should be \\ followed by the IP address of the NAS, ex: \\192.168.168.5, what happens when you do this? This should be done on a machine that is in the same network where the NAS is.

Re: How to use my NAS

When I make a networkconnection as:

\\192.168.0.11

I got: No Access, check the name, or there is a problem with the network.

when I  make a networkconnection as \\192.168.0.11\Musik

then I have a share to the NAS\Musik

I think it is not OK to make a networkshare for each MAP, So I have one share\\192.168.0.11\Give_it_a_name.

I put everything in a map on this location.

I have renamed my share \\192.168.0.11\Give_it_a_name to NAS.

and that part is more ore less working.

when I use IE (or Edge) and I go to 192.168.0.11 then I only can logon as admin on my NAS.

That's not the intent I'm sure.

Your mapped drives (or shortcuts, whatever) should still be there.  What happens if you re-create them?

Re: How to use my NAS

Hello Stephen,

See also the post above, when I want to make a connection with the nas is is only possible by make a share to a sub map.

and (I saw it yesterday evening) when I use ready cloud.

But only when I open the ready cloud, click on a map, (explorer opens ans all the maps are visible).

After closing the explorer and reopen the explorer the nas is gone. (except the \\192.168.0.11/Give_it_a_name)

This evening I will see what happens on the tablet (W8.1) after installing ready cloud.

Re: How to use my NAS

Hello Bouwe,

Typing the IP address in a web browser will take you to the admin page where you can really only use admin login and not other user accounts.

As for mapping the NAS IP, it is possible that you have the SMB disabled, check under Settings, you will see SMB see if it is turned on green. If it is not, you won't be able to access the shares via \\. Just enable it. Then on the each share that you want to be able to map, go to Settings ng click Network Access and turn on SMB.

Much better if you give us screenshot of what you have under Shares of the admin page where it shows all the shares and the file protocols it has enabled.

Re: How to use my NAS

Your share can be mapped to a PC drive letter, or accessed via a windows shortcut, and placed in "computer" as a network resource.

I'm not completely sure what you mean by a submap - maybe you can explain?

Re: How to use my NAS

Stephan,

On my NAS I have created 5 maps/folders:. 1.My Son 2, My Company, 3 Pictures, 4 Music, 5. Give_it_a_name

and there is created a MAP home, with for each user  a home MAP.

To acces the NAS I should make a mapping with a drive letter.

I have to do that each time when I make a new MAP. So for me I schould make 5 mappings and 1 to Home.

and I have to make these mappings on all the machines I use. Thats crazy, because it is a NAS.

I expected that the NAS schould be vissible in the network and that I can grant access by username on each MAP/Folder.

To make it handsome working I only use map 5. Give_it_a_name

and in this map also the maps/folders 1,2,3 and 4

Now I only have to create a share on each device to \\192.168.0.11\Give_it_a_name

More Fun: after installing "Ready Cloud" and select 1 of the maps (1,2,3,4,5) in Ready cloud, an explorer windows opens and I can access all the 5 maps as long as i do not close the explorer. Yes, The NAS is working !

I can find them back under:  Network: 192.168.0.11, tabs 1,2,3,4,5

After closing the explorer, the Nas is only accessible on the share that I had made (5). and the other (1,2,3 and 4) are gone.

So the NAS only will work by using Ready Cloud I think.

The reason I bought a NAS: I would have a station in the network at home with all the files for all off the family.

including the possibility to work on your document on the Desktop or the Laptop or the tablet.

As second. I want to have access to my NAS from my work. But First I want to get my NAS working.

I bought it 2 years ago.

I have struggled with it until april this Year.

In April Netgear took over my computer, and yes after two hours the admin account worked. (I tried to logon as "Admin" where it should be "admin")

After that I can access the NAS as admin and thats all.

Netgear is not supporting any longer, because the system is older than 90 days.
