'Management service is offline' after 6.7.4 upgrade

I inadvertantly kicked off the firmware update to 6.7.4, and now although my RN314 has rebooted, and the display cycles between displaying

ReadyNAS 314

6.7.4

and displaying the current state of a resync on the expansion volume (EDA500), I cannot access the Admin Page. The browser continually recycles at the end of the thermometer bar, and RAIDar lists "Management service is offline" as the status. (Both reflect Firmware: 6.7.4).

I found an earlier thread and re-kicked off the firmware update, incase it hadnt completed - no change.

I've downoaded the logs but don't even know where to start with the litany of files that that brought...

Diagnostics is full of messages like:

  • 2017-06-08 11:30:20: readynasd[21297]: segfault at 0 ip 0000000000484250 sp 00007fcd853e8750 error 4 in readynasd[400000+13b000]

Any suggestions?

Re: 'Management service is offline' after 6.7.4 upgrade

You may have run into an issue fixed by 6.7.5 Beta 1

You could download the firmware update and install it via https://ip.address.of.nas/fwbroker

Re: 'Management service is offline' after 6.7.4 upgrade

Up and running on the Beta. Thank you.

I had a phantom old Volume which i had to delete (some SSD experiments) and it seems I have to share my primary shares on the RN314 volume again, but I'm running again. Many thanks!

Re: 'Management service is offline' after 6.7.4 upgrade

Hi There,

first timer here so apologies for the terminology, I have a RN 2120v2 with FW: 6.7.4,

the status is Management service is offline, my drives are healthy and I can browse the shares and the diagnostics doesn't show any errors whatsoever.

I have critical data on the drives so I cant afford a reset.

Please can you assist me?

Thanks in advance.

Then the first step is to back that data up right away.

After that, likely the fastest way to get this resolved is to use paid netgear support (my.netgear.com). There is a per-incident support option that gets you one hour of support time.

Does https://nas-ip-address/fwbroker respond? Use the real NAS IP of course.

Good.  Try installing 6.7.5 using that interface.  There are some fixes that might apply (though it is not guaranteed) https://kb.netgear.com/000038857/ReadyNAS-OS-6-Software-Version-6-7-5

Unzip the download, and only install the img file.

Re: 'Management service is offline' after 6.7.4 upgrade

Is this after you upload/install the firmware?  Or when you try to upload/install the firmware?

Re: 'Management service is offline' after 6.7.4 upgrade

In some past posts, this was linked to quotas being enabled on a volume with a lot of snapshots.

Try rebooting the NAS - if that doesn't help, try to do an OS reinstall from the front panel.  With current firmware the OS reinstall should clear the volume quota setting.  It also resets the admin password to password and the network configuration to use DHCP.  Data and other settings shouldn't be affected.

The boot menu options for the 4220 rackmount ReadyNAS are on page 33-34 here: http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/RN2120/ReadyNAS_OS_6_Rackmount_HW_UM_10Dec2014.pdf

Re: 'Management service is offline' after 6.7.4 upgrade

If you want to do a factory default, another way is to zero or unpartition the disks.  For instance, connect the drives to a windows system, run the windows disk manager, and then delete all the partitions ("volumes" in windows parlance) on the drives.

Re: 'Management service is offline' after 6.7.4 upgrade

There are two ways I described earlier in this thread

  • boot menu
  • power down, unformat all the disks, then power up

Did you try either of those?

Re: 'Management service is offline' after 6.7.4 upgrade

The first method (boot menu) did not work
The second methode (unformat all the disks) I did not understand it needs more detail

Thanks

  • Connect each disk to a windows PC (USB or SATA).
  • Open the windows disk manager (entering diskmgmt.msc on the run line will work).
  • At the bottom of the disk manager window you will see each disk in the system.  There's a graphic next to each disk that shows every partition (which Windows calls "volumes" for some reason).
  • Right click on each partition in the graphic, and select "delete volume"
  • Put all the disks back into the unpowered NAS and turn it on.  It will do a factory install (since all the disks are blank).
