Pro2 OS6 v6.3.5 fan suddenly gone high speed

Pro2 OS6 v6.3.5

It's been running like a dream - until a backup failed due to running out of disk space on the usb target.

Raidar 4.3.8 doesn't show fan speeds or temp - according to the interface the cpu is 71C and fan is 2606 rpm.

As I have backups of everything would it be best to re-install - via a factory reset?

If so, what is the best way to do this? Am I correct that the Pro2 would use the OS6 I installed using this link?

https://community.netgear.com/t5/ReadyNAS-in-Business/OS6-upgrade-question-on-legacy-Pro-6/m-p/97909...

Many thanks.

David

Yes, on these CPUs, T-junction temps in the 70s are nothing to be worried about.  Atom CPU temps tend to ramp up very quickly when they're under load, but they're designed to handle that. 🙂

Re: Pro2 OS6 v6.3.5 fan suddenly gone high speed

I might have 'panicked' prematurely.

Alerts came in during the backup:

CPU temperature exceeded safety threshold. (91 C).

In the last hour the fan has noise / speed has reduced considerably (graph below).

From my Pro2 (1TB disks):

From my Ultra (2TB disks):

ultra2 temps.pngultra 2 fan.png

Is there anything I should be concerned about with the CPU temp spike?

Many thanks,

David

Re: Pro2 OS6 v6.3.5 fan suddenly gone high speed

I was running 6.2.4 on my Pro 6 and upgraded to 6.4 and now my fans run on startup but after a while they shutdown and the internal temp goes way up, it should be around 30C and it's up around 70C. I am thinking that upgrading the FW may not have been a good idea

OS6 6.3.5

Yes, my Pro2 and Ultra2 are definitely running hot like yours though the fan speeds are very low:

and the Ultra2:

Any thoughts please?

Yeah those temps are way too hot. We need to change something that will kick the fan speeds up.

Re: Pro2 OS6 v6.3.5 fan suddenly gone high speed

The fans are rotating and the expelled air is about room temp only. I'm wondering if the sensors are working properly on the 6.3.5 for legacy?

Any gurus please?

Re: Pro2 OS6 v6.3.5 fan suddenly gone high speed

Hi davidr1,

Kindly update the Firmware to 6.4.0 version and see if the fans will behave normally. If it won't it, kindly give me a copy of the device logs.

Hope this helps!

Kind regards,

Hi BrianL,

Thanks for helping.

I backed up both Ultra and Pro. Temps still going up after upgrading to 6.4.0.

How do I attach zip files, please?

Many thanks, David

Those CPUs are rated to operate up to 100C.  Even on 6.2.x, we never attempted to increase the fan speed until the CPU hit 80C.

Are you saying no harm is being done? I just don't want to harm two good units.

It seems most running OS6 6.35 / 6.4.0 on Ultra2 / Pro2 units run at ~35C.

I don't recall seeing temps under legacy 4.x so would not know if they are any different.

Please understand I just don't want to lose two good units. If these temps are nothing to be concerned about I'll sleep a lot better!

I appreciate your help,

David
