Pulled bad drive, but now c is unprotected
hi,
i had 4 drives, one failed and i sent it back to netgear, but rather than re-stripe, i'm looking at a vol c: unprotected.. ideas how to resolve?
Configuration: RAID Level X-RAID2, 4 disks
Status: Not redundant. A disk failure will render this volume dead.
RAID Disks:
Ch 1 : Seagate ST31000528AS [931 GB] 927 GB allocated
Ch 2 : Seagate ST31000528AS [931 GB] 927 GB allocated
Ch 3 : Seagate ST31000528AS [931 GB]
Ch 4 : WDC WD30EZRS-00J99B0 [2794 GB] 927 GB allocated

Did you hot plug the new drive? Try rebooting the unit.

Pulled bad drive, but now c is unprotected
You cannot achieve redundancy until you replace the failed drive. Similarly you cannot reduce the number of drives in a RAID array and continue to have full redundancy without completely resetting the array (and so requiring you to back & restore your data)
I would suggest reading-up about RAID as it doesn't work they way you appear to want/expect. Wikipedia has good info though there are many references if you search
Note that the reference to X-RAID2 means your NAS is configured to use an enhanced version of RAID-5 (the enhancements enabling online volume expansion which is not supported by traditional RAID-5)

Re: Pulled bad drive, but now c is unprotected
The RAID status that you have is called a degraded RAID.
