ReadyNAS 312 Backup to attached USB stalls internet connection
I have a ReadyNAS 312 [Firmware 6.9.0] which is scheduled to backup as [volume: data -> USB/eSATA Ports (USB Back Top)] - this backup is simply backing up the NAS drive -its incremental and runs for about 10 minutes.
My problem is as soon as this starts running the internet connection drops from 69mbps to 2mbps - completely shutting down the internet.
The Performance graph in [System > Performance] shows the [operations per second] zooming up to between 300-600 per second. The Network graph [bytes per second] increases from nothing to 384k per second.
As an attached USB drive, I assumed this wouldn't be using the network - but am I mistaken that the NAS will comunicate to the USB over the Network to backup the NAS?

It shouldn't be. What protocol are you using?
