ReadyNAS 314, 6.5.1, performance off cliff at 95% capacity

Hi,

Just wasted 4 hours trying to diagnose a ReadyNAS 314, 6.5.1 with terrible disk io performance, unable to even read at 2-3MB/s

Symptoms, high sys CPU consumption, kworker threads running at 100% CPU, random processes with disk IO running at 100% CPU for minutes at a time... seemed like something was blocking for minutes at a time, then it would clear up. iowait was always low, so feels like a bug.

Solve by reducing disk consumption down to 80%. Not sure BTRFS is ready for mainstream given this, NTFS, EXT3/4 do not fall off a cliff like that, and the annoying fact that as far as I could tell the FS thought it was healthy, not complaining about an resources issues etc

Data point for others if they hit this

Thanks

Can you send in your logs (see the Sending Logs link in my sig)?

The logs may give some more information on what happened.

We do start warning about volume usage when it exceeds 70%.

It's best not to fill any filesystem 95% full. You're far more likely to run into problems with any filesystem when it's full than when it has plenty of free space. With EXT4 we found users were far more likely to run into filesystem issues with a full filesystem than one with plenty of free space.

If you use snapshots you can adjust the threshold at which snapshots start to be deleted.

Do you use bit-rot protection and/or snapshots?
