ReadyNAS 6.6 on 204 - stop working :-(

Hi to everyone.

I received a bad news today. I wnt back to home and I found the readynas freezed with a "_309 out of memory" in the LSD.

I transfered a lot of file with RSYNC from the 204 (backup job owner) to a 202 (RSYNC server).

I have 4x3TB HD so I transfered only few parts of my data. The NAS was only with PLEX but in OFF position because it was not working after the ReadyNAS upgade to 6.6.

When I rebooted (unplugged and plugged again) It works for a while, just the time to enter via WEB and to check if everything seems ok, and it freeze! 😞

I tryed 3-4 time... I turned of ReadyDLNA and removed PLEX.

it now works... boot, 1 minute and it freez. No error message. LCD off. No blinking lights 😞

I really don't know what to do... I have to much media files to backup and reset with a fresh Install.

Re: ReadyNAS 6.6 on 204 - stop working :-(

Can you get in long enough to enable ssh?

Also, does it respond to ping after it freezes?  How about RAIDar?

Out of Memory would suggest a memory leak of some kind. I have sent you a PM.

Re: ReadyNAS 6.6 on 204 - stop working :-(

RAIDar can find it in booting state and in active... after a while (less than a minute) it cannot find the NAS.

I can try to enable the SSH but I'm not sure I can do something.

Re: ReadyNAS 6.6 on 204 - stop working :-(

I'm going to read it. Thanks.

PS: If there's a way, I can reset the NAS and configure it again in few minutes. My priority is to retain the data on disks (6 TB).

Re: ReadyNAS 6.6 on 204 - stop working :-(

Does it come up fine if you boot it into volume read-only mode (a boot menu option)?

If so can you download the logs and send the zip file in (see the Sending Logs link in my sig)

Re: ReadyNAS 6.6 on 204 - stop working :-(

I tried the the boot in "OS install", but the boot stopped at 95%. Freezed.

I removed all the disks, and started again: it went on. I entered in the web admin, I turned on the SSH and launch an "apt-get update".

I switched off the NAS.

I put all the disks inside, closed, turned ON and after a minutes it freezed but with a new error message:

do_exit+890

Now, If I boot with disks, it freeze after more or less, 1 minute.

If I boot without disks, I can read an error message in the LCD:

ERR: no disks detected.

I really don' know what else to do 😞

Re: ReadyNAS 6.6 on 204 - stop working :-(

After more than 8 hours of memory test (passed!) I tried to start the NAS.

It wrote DO (my volume's name) Degraded.

Then, it started to recovery the disk 4 with the light flashing on disk 4 and on the close light.

But after 20 minutes, the percentage was the same (0,00%), so I turned off.

Re: ReadyNAS 6.6 on 204 - stop working :-(

I'm still freezed... now it stops in Booting... 😞

I can't understand one thing: without disks, it is supposed to boot and to be accessible via WEB, right?

Because I can't!

I don't know if there's something wrong in the NAS hardware but I hope to recover all my data 😞

No.  The operating system is on the disks, so the NAS can't boot w/o them.

However, RAIDar should be able to see it, and give you some status (e.g. "no disks").

Re: ReadyNAS 6.6 on 204 - stop working :-(

I don't know what else to do... after another Tech access to NAS, I can't boot the device.

After 40 minutes of booting i can read on LCD:

Retry startup.

When I clicked on the power button the text changed to:

fvbackup-p.servi

After it started again but there's the same experience.

It could be an HW problem?

Re: ReadyNAS 6.6 on 204 - stop working :-(

No more answers? 😞

I have to ask for a new NAS? I have no other ideas... I don't know what to do but I'm still unable to use it. I installed the NAS only 4 months ago! 😞

Re: ReadyNAS 6.6 on 204 - stop working :-(

Were you ever able to get the logs to mdgm?

One option is to use Netgear support.

If you can connect the disks to a PC, then you could run vendor diags on them (seatools for seagate, lifeguard for western digital).

Re: ReadyNAS 6.6 on 204 - stop working :-(

I already sent the LOGS few days ago 😞

I'm going to try the disks... I'm waiting others instructions but in the meanwhile I can try.

Thanks.

Re: ReadyNAS 6.6 on 204 - stop working :-(

Clicking the power button, during the very long BOOTING (8-9 minutes) al 99% stage, the LCD show:

apache2.service

From RAIDar I can read this:

2016-10-26 21:57:52: md/raid:md127: raid level 5 active with 3 out of 4 devices, algorithm 2

Re: ReadyNAS 6.6 on 204 - stop working :-(

Evolution:

I started without one disk (the first one).

The boot was done succesfully!

The volume was in "red" state...

I turned off, I put the disk inside (all in).

I turned on.

The LCD wrote: D0 (my volume name) Degraded.

I was so happy... because I saw all my files in the EXPLORE!

I was looking the counter in reconstructing...

0.00%... 0.01%...0.20% and in freezed again!

NOOOOOOOO!!! 😞

Any ideas?

Re: ReadyNAS 6.6 on 204 - stop working :-(

Update:

I started the NAS in READ MODE to check my data...

I can see data (without the 4th disk because I cant resync it, because it freeze)

I tried to copy data but after a while, the NAS freeze.

I tried again bootin' in READ mode, I set the FAN to maximum speed and I started to copy... I'm copyng to PC part of my data!!!

So, maybe it is a problem of temperature? In that case, could be an HW problem? Because I didn't change anything and 1 week ago started to freeze.

Re: ReadyNAS 6.6 on 204 - stop working :-(

A lot of disk shuffling since May, but there is nothing concerning in the SMART stats.

You'd be getting log errors if there was a thermal shutdown. You can also monitor temps during the transfers.  I don't think its thermal.

Possibilities include a failing PSU (power use certainly goes up when you are transfering data), a disk lockup, a memory problem, or some corruption in the file system, ...

There is some reason to suspect the NAS hardware, so you might want go with per-incident netgear support.  There's be no charge if a warranty replacement is needed.  Even if they do charge (because there problem isn't covered by warranty), that is likely the fastest way to get working again.

Thanks... I'm doing the process in netgear support. I'll write there the solution, to help future users.

Re: ReadyNAS 6.6 on 204 - stop working :-(

I booted the NAS in Read Volume, and copied all the DATA.

I was able to do that after the changing of power setting (no auto sleep of disks after XX minutes of inactivity).

Like suggested from Tech Support, I restarted in factory default so a complete reset.

Now I'm coping all the data in the NAS and seems everything ok... I configured the NAS in the same way (before the reset), with 1 APP (Plex). I turned on, for data safety, the Dropbox backup in the cloud tab.

I hope that it will works without other surprise 🙂
