ReadyNAS NV+ v2 - Volume C: dead

Hi there,

Found the error message "Vol C: is dead" on the front LED screen of my NAS this morning.  It's a ReadyNAS NV+ v2 with 3x WD RED 4TB disks, can't remember if it's FlexRAID or XRAID2, all space as one volume, firmware 5.3.13 (as of a couple of months ago), unable to open shares/mapped drives, unable to browse admin web page, RAIDAR finds it on the network and says it's 'Healthy' and ticks on the three disks.

I've not restarted the unit yet.

Any pointers as to what to do next please?

Regards,

Kris.

Do you have a backup?

Re: ReadyNAS NV+ v2 - Volume C: dead

Hi StephenB,

I have a backup for most of it.  Not a great loss if I can't get the rest back.  Does it sound like a disk failure, h/w failure or something else?

Re: ReadyNAS NV+ v2 - Volume C: dead

It does sound like a disk failure (or maybe two drives failed).

So I suggest testing the drives in a Windows PC using vendor tools (seatools for seagate, lifeguard for western digital).  Label them by slot as you remove them (just in case the array isn't really dead).

Note that if the PC doesn't have accessible SATA ports, you can use a USB dock or adapter.  Make sure the adapter handles 3.5" disks, some are 2.5" only.

Thanks.  Will try that over the weekend.

Re: ReadyNAS NV+ v2 - Volume C: dead

So I restarted the NAS tonight and voila, back up and running.  Any particular log files to check?  I found this in the user.log file that may give a hint to a faulty disk but is this conclusive?  Looks like it crashed a few days after the disk errors, even though it started and shutdown okay a couple of time.

Is it still advisable to check the disks on a PC with the WD tool?

Kris.

Re: ReadyNAS NV+ v2 - Volume C: dead

Also, the SMART info from ReadyNAS dashboard shows nothing about errors for the disks.

Re: ReadyNAS NV+ v2 - Volume C: dead

I don't think the -1 to 0 count increases matter - I believe that sometimes the NAS will intialize counters to -1, and then of course the real SMART stats will look like an increase.

I think you should download the log zip file, and perhaps ask @mdgm-ntgr if he is willing to review it for you.

I wouldn't run disk diags now though.  If your backup is out-of-date, I'd recommend taking care of that.
