Rebuilt Win 7 PC cannot connect to ReadyNAS Duo

Hi,

I have a ReadyNAS Duo V1 and it's been working fine for well over a year. I have a number of Windows Vista, 7 and 8 PC's on my network and they can connect to the shares on the ReadyNas without issue.

The network consists of a Netgear ProSafe GS724T switch acting as DCHP server connected to most PC's via cat5e. A BT Home Hub 3 providing wireless access to a laptop and Android devices. There is a reserved IP range configured on the DCHP and the ReadyNas is set (Via ReadyNas front view) to a static address in that reserved range, everything else uses DCHP.

I've recently rebuilt one of my Win 7 PC's (I'll call it 'belle' from here on), with Win 7 HP 64 due to an SSD upgrade, and since the upgrade it cannot see or connect to the ReadyNAS.

Belle can see and connect to shares on the other PC's through Windows Explorer.
Belle can access the internet
Belle is connected via cat5e
Belle can ping the ReadyNAS both by name and IP.
If I run RAIDAR Belle can detect the ReadyNAS, and load and log-in to the Front View interface by clicking 'setup', however If I try and 'browse' via RAIDAR I receive and error.
The ReadyNAS does not appear Belle's the Windows Explorer.
Typing in the name or IP of the ReadyNAS directly into the Windows Explorer address bar returns an error, with or without a share name.
Belle's primary user is configured with the same username and password as previously, which is also the same as another of the PC's which can connect perfectly well.
Belle is configued to be on a Home network but I have tried Work Network too
Network discovery and file sharing is enabled on Belle
The ReadyNAS does appear on the Network Map (Network and Sharing Centre -> See Full Map)
I've tried enabling and disabling IP6
I've also tried disabling the firewall

Any ideas?

This would be \\name or \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx ??? What error are you seeing?

If you try "net use" to map a NAS share to a drive letter, what happens?

Re: Rebuilt Win 7 PC cannot connect to ReadyNAS Duo

Hi,

yes, what is the error you see when you type \\nas-xx-xx-xx (replace with your nas hostname)

also, from the command line, type: pushd \\nas-xx-xx-xx
what error do you see now?

then try from command line: net use \\nas-xx-xx-xx readynaspassword /user:readynasusername (thats an already setup readynas user)

if in windows explorer, you go to Network.. what do you see? you should see your pc, plus any other pc's on the network, including the readynas.. you should also an icon that will take you to readynas admin..

yep

\\SCOOBY\media
or
\\192.168.0.222

net use z: \\SCOOBY\media
System error 58 has occurred.
The specified server cannot perform the requested operation.

same error with
net use z: \\192.168.0.222\media

From explorer address bar:
\\SCOOBY\media

Windows cannot access \\SCOOBY\media
Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise...

from cmd window:
pushd \\SCOOBY\media
The specified server cannot perform the requested operation.

Same error as above with net use with the password and username.

From Windows Explorer Network view I can see:
Computer(3)
BELLE, AMY, HUGO

Network Infrastructure(1)
BT Home Hub 3.0

Other Devices(1)
BT Home Hub 3.0

Storage(1)
ReadyNAS Duo (SCOOBY)

Right clicking on the ReadyNAS icon allow me to connect to the Front View application via a web browser. On my other PC's (and this one before the rebuild) SCOOBY also appeared under the "computers" section.

Re: Rebuilt Win 7 PC cannot connect to ReadyNAS Duo

Perhaps try the net use command again with a different share (and using the NAS admin credentials)???

Also, have you tried turning your internet security/antivirus software off?

BTW, my ReadyNAS also only appear on "storage", so that in itself it not the problem.

Note he can ping the NAS and connect to it via Frontview. It appears to be only SMB/CIFS access that is failing. Is there something specific you are thinking might be wrong with the iP configuration?

Though the original post is clearly wrong when it identifies the GS724T as the DHCP server. That must be the home hub.

yes exactly.. I just noticed this morning that he is saying he has restricted the ip range and given the a static ip to the nas.. i just wanted to see his ip configuration in case while tinkering something has gone amiss. maybe node type.. just trying to help, im mostly assuming it will all be correct like you say..

Probably sensible to start double-checking assumptions, since we aren't making any progress.

Yes, sorry you are correct the home hub is the DHCP server, sorry to add to the confusion 😞

I'll check out the other suggestions in a bit.

I've tried connecting with the firewall disabled, but not sure how to disable MSE without uninstalling it.

I also tried connecting via net use to just the NAS and the \media folder with 'admin' and password combo which I can use to log into the frontview web page, but got the same System Error 58.

If I edit the URL to the frontview pages by deleting the '/admin' I get the 'My Shares' page with the message "No shares currently available" even though the 'media' share has default access set to read only.

Could it be something to do with the way the shares are setup, a while ago I couldn't delete files with one of my PC's and spent quite a while looking though readynas tutorials on how to enable some users write access and others read-only access to the 'media' folder. All the other PC's were built before I made those changes.

Current CIFS settings are:

Default Access: Read Only

Share Access Restrictions -> write enabled users: 2 users listed.

Advanced CIFS Permissions ->Automatically set permissions on new files and folders (ticked).
Advanced CIFS Permissions ->When new files are created over CIFS... Group rights: read/ write, Everyone rights: Read-only.
Advanced CIFS Permissions ->When new folders are created over CIFS... Group rightd: read/ write, Everyone rights: Read-only.

Oppertunistic Locking-> Enable oplocks for this share (ticked).

Advanced Share Permission -> Share folder group: nogroup

Advanced Share Permission -> Share folder owner rights: Read/ write (greyed out)
Advanced Share Permission -> Share folder group rights: Read/ write
Advanced Share Permission -> Share folder everyone rights: Read/ write

Win 7 PC cannot connect to ReadyNAS Duo

I'm sorry for not presenting a solution. My problem is, however, very similar to the actual problem related to a ReadyNAS Duo Version1.
It was started 3-4 years ago from a W2k-PC but not really used since, and I have now forgotten the password.
I found some info related to "retrieve the password" but this is not working. Does anyone how how to initiate?

I then looked into a HW manual (for V2 ???) and this worked apparently neither. (I have later found that v2 on my Duo does NOT mean Version 2). The exercise resulted in a reset of the password, but then I had moved to a PackardBell laptop where I installed RAIDar and it worked OK including the "setup-button", so I thought my problem was solved - BUT...

My problems is now very similar to mr_yogi's

I have found NO way through Win7 to the Duo. Only the RAIDar (excluding the "Browse-button") and the "http:<ip no>/admin" works.

My reason for telling this comes now. I have another PC (a media PC used only for watching TV) also with Win7 and on the same LAN. When I tried to enter Win-explorer on this PC the Duo was immediately accessible under Network and I can assign drive-letter as needed, in short, no apparent problems.

My conclusion is that the problem is stored inside Win7 in my PackardBell and not in the Duo.
Are there some Windows addicts that can translate this into useful knowledge?

On my mediaPC in Win-explorer the Duo appears 3 times: 1)Computer 2)Storage 3)Media
On PackardBell the 1)Computer entry is missing --- 2) and 3) is OK
During my exercise I have updated the Duo to version 4.1.10 I don't recall the previous version.

Re: Rebuilt Win 7 PC cannot connect to ReadyNAS Duo

If you have http enabled for your shares, you should see your share list if you browse to http://nasname/shares and log in. If http is not enabled, then of course the share won't be shown.

Mine have the folder owner set to nobody.

You could try checking the box next to "Set ownership and permission for existing files and folders in this share to the above settings..." and click apply. That will reset all files and subfolders in the share to those permissions. The checkbox will immediately clear, and you will see a popup when the operation completes.

Re: Rebuilt Win 7 PC cannot connect to ReadyNAS Duo

i was thinking the same thing.. investigating this further, the answer could get quite complicated with regards to your network settings.. my advice is to take the question to superuser.com..

i think the fact that its netgear or readynas is not important.. you probably dont need to talk about that.. just explain the fact that youve got a nas, w7 64bit and everything you've said on here so far, especially the System Error 58.. and hopefully someone will help you out.. youll get a lot more support from some good people. if you do, give us a link to the question so we can follow it.. good luck..
