Upgraded PRO 6 to 6.5.1, had fan problems, went back to 6.5.0 and all is well again

Hi,

After having succesfully used 6.5.0 on my PRO 6 since the day it came out, I upgraded to 6.5.1 today.

The system fan started to act weird. When putting the fans on COOL, it took a little while before they were speeding up. Setting them on BALANCED made the system fan turn red, after which it started an iteration of speeding up, slowing down, speeding up, etc.

Decided to go back to 6.5.0 and all is great again.

Could it be that the "Fan speed adjustment on systems with erratic fan readings" that were done in the 6.5.1 release are no longer compatible with a PRO 6?

Thanks!

Just to clarify - did you install the released 6.5.1 or 6.5.1-RC1?

Hi Stephen,

6.5.1, which you can download from http://downloadcenter.netgear.com/ -> storage -> ReadyNAS -> ReadyNAS-OS6.

Re: Upgraded PRO 6 to 6.5.1, had fan problems, went back to 6.5.0 and all is well again

I'm a bit confused which model is which...  I have the 6.5.1 released today installed on a Pro (RNDP6000-100) and have no fan issues beyond the normal oddities I'm used to seeing with running OS 6 on it.

This unit was actually recently factory reset with firmware 6.5.0 on it (but I doubt that makes any difference in regards to fan speeds.)

I had this same issue.  6.5.0 on ReadyNAS Pro 6 works fine, but 6.5.1 caused alerts every few minutes with fan speeds that were too slow, even after setting it on "COOL".  I rolled back to 6.5.0 and the issue went away, so the firmware is definitely not working correctly on the Pro 6.

Thanks for confirming this issue.

As the fan control on my PRO 6 works really well in 6.5.0 - I even like to say that it works better than any other version (even the OS 4 ones) - I hope that a future 6.5.x version will embed the way it works in 6.5.0. If not, then I will stick with 6.5.0.

Re: Upgraded PRO 6 to 6.5.1, had fan problems, went back to 6.5.0 and all is well again

I have not even updated from 6.4.2, as there are quite often issues with a major upgrade and a quick release of a fix -- as there was here.  Now, I'm not sure if I should upgrade to 6.5.1, 6.5.0, or nothing at this time.

There are several factors that may be in play as to why some are affected and others not.  Operating temperature ranges due to ambient temperature, different drive types, and different processors may be a factor.  The true "Pro 6" (RNDP6xxx-200 series) has a different processor that the Pro Business Edition (RNDP6xxx-100 series) and Pro Pioneer (RNDP600E), and some users have upgraded their processors.  I have read here that some very early Pro BE's even have a different motherboard revision.  So beiing as detailed as you can may help Netgear sort out why this affects some and not others and help folks like me decide whether an upgraded is the right move.

I too am experiencing new fan issues/warnings since upgrading to 6.5.1

[quote]Fan System in enclosure Internal speed is below threshold. (458 rpm).[/quote]

Curiously, this seems to only affect my pro 6 and not my pro business or ultra 4.

 serial 2H062BR600420 if that helps narrow it down, no hardware modifications other than os6.5.1.

Ditto here!  ReadyNAS Pro 6 running 6.5.0 was great!

Upgraded to 6.5.1 and started having problems with fan errors like the ones below to the point the system shut down to protect itself.  Rebooted and it would happen again within a day.

Decided to revert back to 6.5.0 and everythign is golden again!  Highly recommend 6.5.0 for ReadyNAS Pro 6's.  Hope they address these fan issues in a release after 6.5.1, but for now staying put on 6.5.0 which works great.

Re: Upgraded PRO 6 to 6.5.1, had fan problems, went back to 6.5.0 and all is well again

Thanks for confirming the issue.

Personally, I find 6.5.0 the best working OS of all versions I have had running on my PRO 6 (incl. OS 4) with regards to controlling the fans.

If this would be the last OS 6 version that would run on my PRO 6, then my only wish would be how I can prevent the firmware update check that is being done when logging on.

Alternatively, OS 6.5.2 could include the following code:

* fan control *

SWITCH (system_model) {

   CASE "PRO 6":

      <paste here the code from 6.5.0>;

      BREAK;

   CASE anything else

      <code what's best for the other models>;

      BREAK;

}

Sorry, I only read the first chapter of Java for Dummies 🙂

Re: Upgraded PRO 6 to 6.5.1, had fan problems, went back to 6.5.0 and all is well again

I am having issues which have been reported as being v5.5.1 related other than the fan.

I see lots of talk about rolling back to 6.5.0, but no instructions as to where to get the firmware.

Could someone please post a link?

Regards!

The download links are in the Release Notes

For x86_64 units (including all legacy x86 units that are running OS6) you would use the x86 download link.

We also have ReadyNASOS 6.5.2-T486 (Beta 1) firmware but there are no changes related to fans in the Release Notes so there may not be any changes related to that.

Re: Upgraded PRO 6 to 6.5.1, had fan problems, went back to 6.5.0 and all is well again

I have an Ultra 6. I upgraded this yesterday to 6.5.1 and encountered the same fan problems.

So I downgraded it to 6.5.0 and all works fine.

Today I upgraded to 6.5.2-T486 (Beta 1).

The fan behaviour is the same as under 6.5.1.

I.e. speeding up and immediately slowing down, speeding up, slowing down etc.

my pro6 with xeon x3230 is running with 6.5.2 beta 1 with fans at "balanced" setting

no prob just once with internal fan speed below threshold (479rpm)and it corrected immediately to higher rotation speed

Re: Upgraded PRO 6 to 6.5.1, had fan problems, went back to 6.5.0 and all is well again

I am in need of some help with my Pro 6.  I've upgraded from 4.2.28 to 6.5.1 without any issues other than my CPU fan reporting as 0rpm as I have moved the fan to the additional system fan header.  I've managed to find some topics on how to fix it, however if I then label the 'System' fan as 'CPU' my fan will run at it's max speed no matter what setting I have it on.  Whereas my system fan barely raises it's speed no matter the setting or how hot the sensor is reading.

Am I better off just leaving them both labled as system fans or will this cause other issues with them not spinning at the correct RPMs???

I've also just rolled back to version 6.5.0 and I'm still seeing the same issue.

below is a copy of my /etc/sensors.d/system.conf

chip "coretemp-isa-0000"
        label temp2 "CPU"
        ignore temp3

Same problem with "Fan System in enclosure Internal speed is below threshold. (458 rpm)" on Pro 6 with 6.5.1 (but as I remember 6.5.0 has same problem).

Hi anubis1,

Well, that would be your call. Some have already downgraded and some dont'. Much better send in your logs and address it to mdgm to check what's wrong with the fan on your ReadyNAS system.

Kind regards,

Would be better to get logs on firmware where you are running into the problem. Logs on a firmware where you are not having issues are of little value.

Re: Upgraded PRO 6 to 6.5.1, had fan problems, went back to 6.5.0 and all is well again

I'm having issues in both builds.  If I run the CPU fan off the CPU fan header it will run at maximum speed.  If I put it on the spare system fan header it will either run slow and not spin up when the CPU gets hot or fluctuate wildly.  If I edit /etc/sensors.d/system.conf as I have shown on the previous page with fan3 labled as 'CPU' it will run it at maximum speed again.

At the moment it seems to have settled down somewhat but I cannot be sure it will stay that way,

I installed the latest beta (652 T486).

It had the fan issue.

Started the recovery to factory settings.

Still has the fan issue.
