I forgot to mention. On my router / firewall I created a separate wifi network just for the generator. Generac says their wifi needs to be within 25 feet of the wireless router. Ugh! I did not want the generator outside my windows when I could run for more then a day. So bought the Netgear EAX20, configured it and placed it on a shelf I built under a basement window. The generator now sees it's own special wifi network with good signal strength. (r ur 5nn tu 😃) There is nothing on this separate wifi network but the generator and the Netgear EAX20. The Netgear knows the LAN IP addresses all begin with 10.123 aka a private IP just as 192.168 is. The Netgear understands the LAN ip as it got one for itself via DHCP 10.123.123.55. I was surprised to see it trying to send packets to 192.168.1.255. I caught my iMac and my M1 mac mini doing this. But they only did it once right after an OS update. Not non-stop several times a minute.
I live out in the country. A 5.2 acre island in a sea of corn and soybean fields. My nearest neighbor is slightly over a quarter of a mile away. The next nearest is close to 3/4 of a mile. I was thrilled when I moved here to find that the local small Phone COOP had run fiber to my house. I have a gigabit router and two gigabit 8 port switches all connected by Cat6E. For a long time the only thing in my house that used wifi was my wife's and my cellphones when we were in house. Then Iowa winters followed by two Derechos that caused a few long power outages. The last two were in the winter when the temps outside were way below zero. I bit the bullet and bought an 18 kw whole house generator. I has wifi. I did not want it on the house network so I created a single use wifi network just for it. There is nothing on that network other then the Generator 10.123.123.60 and the Netgear EAX20 10.123.123.55.
I have down loaded and read the manual. I have searched the website to no avail. I don't see anything like this posted by others. I suspect a lot of others have great incoming rules. I have almost as many rules watching outgoing packets.
The ip address that the EAX20 is broadcasting to "192.168.1.255" is called a "multicast" and it normally used to send something to all IP addresses in the 192.168.1.254 network. I have not seen this used in a long time. I opened a ticket with netgear yesterday. Ticket #46644460. After they finally understood what I was talking about they put me on lengthy holds a couple of times. They then came back and told me that they had to escalate this. They were going to call me back in 15 minutes. That was yesterday. No call back so far
I got logged into the EAX20 but cannot see why it would be doing multicast. The EAX20 knows it's IP is a 10.123 ip and it is using it successfully. There are no 192.168 IP's on my LAN. The EAX20 is doing this multicast continuously every second or two flooding the event log of my firewall.
