EX8000 ARP / connectivity issue

Hi All,

I have recently purchased an EX8000 Nighthawk X6S triband wifi range extender. This is located with the TV and provides connectivity to my media server amongst other items as well as acting as a wifi range extender for the back of the house.

It works fine except I'm having intermittent problems connecting to the wifi extender and sometimes also devices connected to it from my main router and anything connected directly to it. On further investigation I'm seeing valid ARP requests from the router to the range extender (which has the IP address 192.168.1.253) going unanswered [arwen is the router]:

root@arwen:~# ping 192.168.1.253
PING 192.168.1.253 (192.168.1.253): 56 data bytes
^C
--- 192.168.1.253 ping statistics ---
4 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss

root@arwen:~# tcpdump -v arp -i br0
tcpdump: listening on br0, link-type EN10MB (Ethernet), capture size 262144 bytes
21:54:11.374993 ARP, Ethernet (len 6), IPv4 (len 4), Request who-has 192.168.1.253 tell arwen, length 46
21:54:12.377595 ARP, Ethernet (len 6), IPv4 (len 4), Request who-has 192.168.1.253 tell arwen, length 46
21:54:13.379598 ARP, Ethernet (len 6), IPv4 (len 4), Request who-has 192.168.1.253 tell arwen, length 46
21:54:15.375723 ARP, Ethernet (len 6), IPv4 (len 4), Request who-has 192.168.1.253 tell arwen, length 46

root@arwen:~# ip neigh show
192.168.1.1 dev br0 lladdr 02:0f:b5:5f:b3:28 REACHABLE
192.168.1.4 dev br0 lladdr 30:85:a9:96:63:0f REACHABLE

<WAN IP redacted> dev eth0 lladdr 00:01:5c:7a:5c:47 STALE
192.168.1.253 dev br0  FAILED

192.168.1.1 is the IP address of my media server, one of the devices with a wired connection to the wifi extender. At this point I have an ARP resolution for that even though I don't for the extender itself.

I'm running firmware version V1.0.0.102 which I believe is the latest (though with the device in this state checking for a firmware update reports that there is no internet connection which I suspect is down to the same issue). Connectivity to the router is configured to use the 4x4 5GHz radio only (on channel 100). The LAN configuration on both the extender and router is for subnet 192.168.1.0, netmask 255.255.255.0 - the extender has a static address of 192.168.1.253 and the router 192.168.1.254 (which is set as the gateway address on the extender).

Any ideas as to what might be causing this?

Re: EX8000 ARP / connectivity issue

Hi marks7389,

I would like to know if you experience this issue on both wired and wireless devices. Also, i would like to confirm if you extended both 2.4 and 5GHz network as one of your statment sounds like you are extending 5GHz band only.

Re: EX8000 ARP / connectivity issue

The issue was affecting connectivity to the repeater itself, but only from router and anything connected via the router.

So if I had a wireless device connected to the repeater I could access the repeater's web interface. If I then moved it so it connected to the my router instead it could longer do so.

I'm only using the 5GHz bank to link the repeater to the router, although both devices also broadcast a 2.4GHz network. The reason for doing so being that I wanted the two devices to use different channels and since the repeater only has a single 2.4GHz radio that isn't possible if you use both bands to link them.

I have managed to resolve the issue by factory resetting the repeater and setting it up again. Same configuration as before but the problem has gone away, for now at least.

Hi marks7389,

Good to know that resetting the device resolved the issue.
