EX8000 mesh extender not boosting 5G

EX8000 firmware 1.0.1.240

My router outputs 2.4G & 5G. EX8000 2.4G & 5G lights are on. 2.4G booster is working fine. 5G is not. Router setup is fixed channel 48. Nighthawk shows channel 104 (DFS). I can't change either to match the other. Any ideas please?

Re: EX8000 mesh extender not boosting 5G

The photos are far from good but serve their purpose. Red peak shows 5G output from router (channel numbers hidden by advert). The star photo is far from pointless. It shows the 5G router output (ch48) & also demonstrates that there is no 5G boost signal on any of the 5G channels. Installing inssider would be a waste of time as my PC is hard wired, no Wi-Fi so not helpful.

The lack of 5G boost is likely to be either a setting not correctly made (no-one has come up with a likely culprit) or a faulty Netgear extender which means an expensive replacement..

It's probably time to end this topic, thanks to those who have tried to help.

While many questions about routers are generic and could be answered anywhere, some things need specialist knowledge.

You might get more help, and find earlier questions and answers specific to your device, in the appropriate section for your hardware. That's probably here:

WiFi Range Extenders & Nighthawk Mesh - NETGEAR Communities

You might like to search there for messages related to your problem.

I will ask the Netgear moderator to move your message.

In the meantime you could visit the support pages:

Support | NETGEAR

Feed in your model number and check the documentation for your hardware. Look at the label on the device for the model number.

Check for various troubleshooting tips.

You may have done this already. I can't tell from your message.

I mention it because Netgear stopped supplying printed manuals and CD versions some years ago and people sometimes miss the downloads.

Re: EX8000 mesh extender not boosting 5G

Hi

thanks for the response

I've got the (downloaded) manual

I've trawled every related website I can find

(I haven't sacrificed a goat yet)

My problem seems to be that my (EE) modem won't go above channel 48 and I can't set the EX8000 below channel 100. No-one else seems to have this problem so maybe I've done something wrong?

Re: EX8000 mesh extender not boosting 5G

The EX8000 is a triband. The 2x 5ghz channels shouldn't be synced. reason why is the dedicated backhaul will connect to the routers 5ghz channels. It then uses the other 5ghz on a different channel to prevent interference.

If you log into the ex8000, you can take a screen snip of the wifi stats page that shows the link between router/extender.

That'll help confirm or see whats going on with the router/extender link

You mean your EE modem/router? Which one?

Modems don't do wifi.

Re: EX8000 mesh extender not boosting 5G

Yes, I mean a modem/router, lazy English. It's an EE Smart Hub (possibly EEH001 no code on box), outputs 2.4G & 5G Wi-Fi. I'm looking with a Net Analyser on a tablet. Shows outputs from EE plus 2.4G boost, but no 5G boost shown.

Re: EX8000 mesh extender not boosting 5G

Screensnips of what you're actually seeing help us to see that as well.

As well as the screen snip of the extenders wifi status page to see whats actually going on

As requested, here are some jpgs for you.

NE1       2.4G showing boost signal

NE2       5G showing modem/router output only

NE3       5G showing clearly no 5G boost

NE4       Status snip

I hope this demonstrates my problem

Re: EX8000 mesh extender not boosting 5G

Your photos leave a lot to be desired. it doesn't show the channel ranges of the wifi bands that you're trying to scan. Data is the key point.

You have the EX8000 in AP mode, so to start off with it shouldn't be on the same channels as your router or it creates interference.
You should have the channels on a different one.

Plus your star photo is a bit pointless. There isn't any meaningful data in it.

Try installing inssider on a pc/laptop. There's a free version of it. Then when you get it running, explore it a bit. Then take screensnips of the data. Get all the info off of it. A random, pixelated photo, without meaningful data on it isn't helpful.

I did a quick one on mine (in a basement otherwise theres 30+ networks) to show you it. And this was just the basics, I selected my network and see each band. Mine are each on the same channels because its a mesh network. Not running in AP mode.

To get better pictures to post in forums from phones or pads, use the screen capture feature on these devices to capture photos directly of any particular app for best clarity and viewability.

Avoid using a external camera to take a photo then posting it.

As mentioned, when in AP mode, Avoid using same channels as main host wifi. Channels need to be far apart across the board between the the two units.

If you are using Extender mode, then yes, the EX should be using same channels as host wifi signal it's connected too.

If you don't think your EX is working after all troubleshooting has been exhausted, then make contact with NG support for additional help and information. Ask about an RMA.
